Newbie question - xls file to Blackberry? -
07-02-2009, 12:00 AM
Apologies, but coming from Palm & Nokia phones, confused how to transfer a spreadsheet from my desktop to Bold 9000.
In the first two mentioned devices this was possible via desktop software; can't seem to find a similar option in the Blackberry desktop.
I have Docs to go on the Bold - came installed on it.
Sorry if asking something obvious!
(Also tips on transferring word files, and .pdf files would be appreciated!)
Thanks in advance!

do you have your media card enabled so that your PC can read it when plugged in? if you do, its just a simple drag and drop into the folder you want it to be in.

You could also email it to yourself.
But yeah, the mass storage mode would be the best way to go.

Thanks guys, will give it a go.
Email not set up yet.
BTW have a nephew works for Google, who tells me they will be releasing shortly a push mail (and possibly Google apps) function for the Blackberry.

OK, here comes the tricky bit (for me).
The mass storage mode is on, but I still can't figure out how or where on Blackberry desktop to transfer the spreadsheet! Doh!
BTW what is the max size of mass storage card the Blackberry will support? Any recommendations as to type of card?

It is up to a 32GB Micro SD card.
With mass storage on, when you plug it in, does anything pop up on screen?
This should be the device drive and media card drive (if a media card is inserted).
then you copy and paste just like any pc to pen drive.

Thanks, I get it now!
Pity this can't simply be done through the desktop!
I presume if I copy a spreadsheet to the card, Doc to Go will find it automatically?
Thanks once again for the help.
BTW does the card ned formatting? How is this done?

yes opening docs to go, will have "open file" then locate the file.
once opened once, it will appear on the first screen under "recently opened documents"
you can put the card in and format in the phone, by going to options - memory
click menu - format then select media card.

Sorry to be late on this - been travelling and now back in office -
OK, when I open Windows Explorer it sees the Blackberry. How do I know if this is the card or main memory?
I tried to create a new folder (presumably on the card) through Explorer and then copy the two spreadsheet files. Seemed to work ok in Explorer but noting in the Blackberry?
What am I missing here?

You wont see them on the BB while still connected.
media card will have folder like documents, pictures.
device memory will have something like USER, then in that folder, folders like documents, pictures.

So what folder on the memory card should I copy the spreadsheet to?
Can I create a new folder on the memory card?

OK, will try again!
I wonder why BlackBerry don't make this a simple part of their desktop a la Palm & Nokia?

Follow up:-
Something strange here (apart from myself!).
Can see the memory card and the folder I created with the files on the BlackBerry with Windoze Explorer.
First time I tried to open on the BlackBerry with Sheet to Go, claimed I did not have sufficient permission. This is wrong, as the attribute is only set to "Archive" and the file is not password protected.
Since then Sheet to Go cannot even see any folders on the memory card nor the file.
I am using the version of S to G as supplied on the BlackBerry.
Am I missing something here?
Is there a file viewer available for the BlackBerry?

Try going to options, advanced, applications, then scroll down to documents to go, then click menu, edit permissions, make sure they are all at allow. If that does not work, try a battery pull: remove the battery from the device for 30 seconds, then put it back in, this resets the bold (keeps all your files intact though), may take a little bit though.

Really appreciate your help & knowledge!
Did all that above, set the permissions correctly; also pulled the battery.
Strange thing is that Windoze Explorer can see the folder "Spreadsheets" that I created, but BlackBerry cannot.
Anything else you can suggest?

When you go to xls viewer, click open a file, then search both media card and device memory to see if you accidentally put it in the wrong place. Also, one more thing, could you give the file extension please. Also, check for updates, click menu, check for updates.

Hi,
File extension is .xls.
Problem now is that the BlackBerry does not see any folders at all on the "Media Card", but does see folders on "Device Memory".
Looks like that may be the issue?

Are you sure you have a sd card inside your phone. Go to options, make sure:
Media Card Support- On
encryption mode- none
Auto enable mass storage mode when connected- either prompt or yes.
If that doesn't work, reformat the media card (make sure you make it a FAT32). Then put it back into the bold. Then connect your phone. Then transfer the file into the sd card. See how that goes.

Thanks for quick reply.
Yes, card is in Bold.
966.7 mb free space.
Options are set as above.
To reformat the card - how is this done? In the Bold, or some other way?

Take the card out of the bold, If you have a sd card reader on your pc, then plug in the card in the pc, then it will show up in my computer, then right click, format, make sure it FAT32. Then just wait till it is complete.

Thanks.
Don't use the BlackBerry "format" option?
I apologise for last reply, apparently BB is seeing the card.
Recreated the folder and copied over the spreadsheet, this time working!
Obviously me.
Sorry for the trouble!
And thanks guys for the help!
Much appreciated!
