Just wondering what the odds might be that the new Optical would fit in the standard ball of the Bold. I'd love to guy a replacement and drop it in there, but I'm not sure how much is hardwired into the board and what is pulled out with the ball assembly.

as the ball is ROUND and the trackpad is SQUARE there is no way its gonna fit.

I'm sure the circuitry is completely different for the two as well.

we are all asses... even more so for reading this thread... you would have to mod the keypad and housing as well... now what about an Optipad that lit different colors... that would be nice

Yes it may be underneath, but the bit you use is round. its in a round hole.

Considering how the BlackBerries are made, I would imagine that this could be a drop-in replacement, just like the way the track balls are. It would require a new middle plate, with a square hole in it. If you go out to Horizon Wireless or the CNN site, you can see that just about anything is user replaceable on BlackBerries.

At least that is what I am hoping for - I think that trackpad would be a lot easier to use, and wouldn't get dust or finger oil in it.

I would also like to think my car battery will fit in place of the Bold's battery--y'know for extra power? :-/

You aren't clever at all I'm sorry to tell you. The shape of the ball itself is round, but it's obviously a question about switching out the assembleys. No one in their right mind (except you apparently) would think of just taking out the trackBALL and trying to fit the trackpad in the round hole.
