When I use the application switcher key (alt esc) and go to the home application it goes to the last open folder which for me is usually the applications folder. I am sure that is the way it is supposed to be, but is there a way to go to the screen where you get all your icons to show up? Thanks in advance.

Close the folder. Once the folder is closed then you will get to the home screen with all your icons. If you leave a folder open on the home screen, the the app switch will just take you back there, so close the folder.
