I have the bold and when i first got it i had no data plan on it because it had built in wi fi...so i figure hey i can just use the wi fi forget the data plan...

well it turns out that you NEED that data plan to access the wi fi (in a sense to were you don't get charged)

a $200 lesson and that is why data is now on my plan

however i still wonder why put wi fi on a phone and still require someone to get the data plan...is it really just all about the money???

You can use WiFi without a data plan. Oprah, Bolt, and other apps do work.

data plan is necessary because your communication data on the BB gets routed via BB servers. So it's more like a fee to compress and route your BB data.

True, if you want/need BB data. But if you're just using it to browse the web, then you can just use the WiFi.

What exactly were you wanting to do without a data plan?

Yea, but the Oprah browser is all bloatware, not worth the time, IMO.
