Question Purchased a Bold 9000 off ebay, possibly 'dead'/'bricked' but somewhat works...

Please Login to Remove!

Hello all,

I just purchased a supposedly 'dead' BlackBerry 9000 from eBay Australia. However, another bidder asked a question about if the phone still works. Here's what was said.

The seller's response is as follows (with my thoughts between quotes)

Possibly sounds like I need to buy a replacement battery...

OK, so the battery does work...

Sounds like I need to full format/wipe it and start fresh. So it's not fully bricked. Phew.

Any help with this matter would be helpful, as with any phone, my view is there's a life for phones after they die.

I'm sure it's possible to get the BlackBerry up and running again, I think I saw a OS reinstall guide & a wiping guide floating around these forums...

Thanks all,
Coburn 64.

Wirelessly posted (overwhelmingly stressed)

Check out the FAQ section.
Download jl_cmder as you will likely need it
Also read jl_cmder doesn't detect BB

Thanks for the reply!

I managed to get more info from the seller, and I'll quote what I said:

I am not pretty sure if the battery is fault because it works on my fd phone. If you could try to search mfi multiloader on the net, it helps to reflash the phone and remove and unlock the phone but from I search it is about 850mb in size.
Can someone explain what the PIN is? Is it like a special code?

I'm guessing jl_cmder will do the same job as mfi multiloader? I am not trying to illegally unlock the device, I am just quoting what he said. I thought I'd put this warning in if a moderator misjudges the post and warns/bans me.

Thanks again.

I would rather have a shot at reflashing it before surrending and holding up the white flag, but yeah.

Anyone else got any ideas?

then do as suggested above.
download jl_cmder, wipe and reload OS.

a PIN is a code that is a)hardcoded into the device, this cannot be changed, b)identifies your phone to the network, c)allows you to send messages to other BB users by their PIN

If you are having these problems, I don't think an OS reload will fix it.

Well, I should receive it sometime soon. It's getting posted from Western Australia to me in queensland.

What I'll do is this:

1. Install Blackberry suite on computer.
2. Install latest OS on computer.
3. Connect the blackberry to pc
4. Wipe using jl_cmder to get 507 error.
5. Reload os (hopefully it won't stall)
6. Profit!!

Is there anything else I missed?

Alright, I have recieved the blackberry and downloaded the Management Software (BB Desktop Manager). I'm still downloading the OS, I opted to use a Optus Asia Paficific one that I found a link to on BlackBerryFAQ.com.

Wish me luck...

OK, so this is odd.

I got somewhere, as I installed the Handheld OS and Connection software successfully, however when I go to wipe the BlackBerry, I follow the steps (connect it to PC, remove battery) and then go "wipe" in JL_Cmder, it says:

Connecting to device...debug: COM error during Open: (0x80040001)
Error: unable to open port

I attempted to update the OS, it got 100% on Loading System software but then said "Timed out waiting for a response on a multi-stage install operation" or something like that.

Other than that, the blackberry will boot into a "No Battery" screen (Battery with line through it) or a Lighting bolt on a battery after a while being connected to USB port. The red light appears, though.

Should I leave it plugged into the power for a while to charge the battery?

Try charging it for a little, also in the link that I gave in the above posts, there is another link which talks about the bold not connecting to jl_cmder, check it out.

Ok, well I plugged my bb into the power, and this is what happened.

I connected the ac cable to the usb in part of the bb, which lit up the red light. Nothing else happened. I went and put some steak on the bbq, came back, the screen had lit up and showed a battery with a lighting bolt on it. When the screen lit up, the red led turned off.

Cheers!

It seems that it may be stuck at the charging screen. I have checked the battery using my voltmeter, it says about 3.8V, but I'm not sure. What should I do next? It's supposedly been charging for some time now for a hour and a bit...

I too got the battery with a red line through it screen unexpectedly and for no good reason. What I found was a problem with the battery's contacts The contacts from the battery to the circuit board were apparently not touching strong enough, so I put a piece of paper at the top of the battery to squish the contacts against the metal contacts at the bottom of the battery. Voila! Problem fixed! Maybe this will help?
