When the CPU is busy it gets hot. If it is hot when you haven't been using it a lot within the last few minutes it can mean that one of your applications is running wild (in an endless loop for example.) Pulling the battery is the easiest, though not always most convenient, way to deal with those. Looking for applications that are still running that should have stopped with Alt-Escape is another way.

I have the same issue since a few days...

Thought my battery was defective. Changed it, but no difference.

Battery is draining at a lighting speed -- 1/2 day, even if little or no activity.

I Tried to stop applications, one after the other. I also reinstalled the OS (317).

Not sure I caught the culprit, but suspect it is BBM (I am on 5.0).

Any smart way to figure out the reason?

perhaps you can list apps you have installed so we can see whats going on:

I dont have BBM 5.0 - I have the older version.

apps installed:

Berry Weather
Free News
Amazon
Google Maps
Dictionary
Tweet Genious
Bee Jive
ThinkPost Sync
Page Once

All latest versions

The only one we have in common is Google Maps, and it could very well be the one... I had terminated it yesterday (and exited location sharing), and my device has been cold...

I am now restarting the application, as well as Latitude. I'll advise.

I tested this as well today - exited G Maps and stopped sharing - no heat so far and battery lasted longer.

Perhaps others with the new G Maps version with layers installed can confirm this as well?

I've had Google Maps closed (with sharing disabled) for most of the day. No heating today... I hope we found it.

Default Same Issue

I posted a similar issue a month ago and got a few responses. Usually means that an app like browser is open. I also noticed that the battery drained and the device overheated when I turned off the Wifi - must have defaulted to the phone carrier and channeled more power into a different antenna

No more heating since 48 hours... Only change is that I've disabled Latitude, and I also exit Google Maps after use, versus just escape.

Always close google maps and make sure it doesn't run in the background because it drains the battery extremely fast and as posted above, it could make the bold hot. Don't just escape. Press menu and exit.

This defeats the purpose of sharing... if you've so chosen.

I did it all the time since the introduction of Latitude, with no issue. The issue started recently.

You can exit and continue sharing.
It wont run in the background, but will continue to share you're location. Ive no idea how, but it asks you when you go to exit.

Google maps w/GPS really drains my battery fast. I make sure to exit when not using.

Run it only on 3G and it should increase some batt life for you. Overall, the bold batt is garbage and doesnt last at all.
