Default Using BB thru home network

Please Login to Remove!

I just got my BB yesterday, and they told me at the store that if I use it through my home network, it doesn't count towards my data plan amount.

I have set it up the Wi-Fi on my home network (Belkin router). But when I try to access the internet, I get a message "Unable to find server".

I don't get very good reception at home, but shouldn't I be able to get on the internet through my router? It says it's connected to my network.

Can anyone help me out? What am I missing?

Is the wi-fi icon white?
When you open the browser, does it show at the top wi-fi (press U if it doesnt show anything)

I should mention that I set the default browser to "Hotspot Browser" (I read that somewhere on this forum) but that doesn't make any difference.

I used my wife`s Bold last night on Wi-Fi and the icon was greyed out. What`s significant about that is that it`s not even activated on the Bell network yet (that doesn`t happen until the 25th). If you`re picking up an IP# from your router, then you`re most likely using Wi-Fi. I don`t put a lot of stock in the icon despite the fact my personal Bold is showing a white icon while I`m at home.

The white icon means the blackberry is connected to RIM infrastructure via Wi-Fi, gray means it isn't. When it is white, any BIS or BES communications that would ordinarily go via your provider (Bell), go by Wi-Fi and the internet.

Nice simple explanation - thanks.

I've tried turning off the mobile network when the WiFi is white and I can't get phone calls, so I assume voice doesn't go thru WiFi? Or does it under some circumstances? I'm with ATT on a BES thru my company. Running 4.6.0.304 because my company will give me 7 kinds of crap for screwing up the phone with an "unofficial OS".

Best not to antagonize your BES Admins. Voice will only go by Wi-Fi if your phone supports UMA and you have your account suitably configured (usually a few extra $$). I don't believe the 8830 supports UMA.
