Once unlocked, always unlocked. But safe? That is another issue all together.

Why do you feel the need? Is your device broken? Does it need to be fixed? Need the added features?

if it works as you need and want, then it doesn't require fixing or risking the dreaded "brick" (although only a slight risk, but can and does happen).

Can't be on OS 6. Hasn't been released for your 9000, besides, the 9000 doesn't have the horsepower to run OS6.

If you are new to BB, I would not update just yet. And if your device does what you need it to, I wouldn't try changing it.

Been there and done that too many times and read about it too many times in these forums.

I can only describe my experience, don't take it as advice. I had my 9000 unlocked from AT&T in March 2010, the tech asked me to replace the AT&T SIM with the foreign one and turn the phone back on. It asked for unlock code and it did work, the phone displayed the foreign carrier name without asking anything else, and since I was still in California there was no foreign signal so the phone stayed on and functional, but no phone or data. After putting back the AT&T SIM the phone could not connect back to AT&T, the Tech determined my SIM too old (early 2008), I purchased a new one and it worked right away.
Since, I've updated to a few 5.0 versions with no problem - DELETING the vendor.xml file, and using Loader.exe.
I am one of those, very rare persons these days that use the cellular to actually make and receive phone calls and to play my WMA music files while I work around the yard, but I can tell you that the phone weighs less with 5.0 and my thumbs are faster.
