I've never done this the way you describe. I've always had the best luck downloading the full os file from the vendor website; for VZW this is
BlackBerry® Software Updates

Then expand the downloaded file, launch desktop manager and let it detect the new software and run the install. If it's a new device with no data you can de-select the optional device backup. It takes a while to do ( the reboot seems to take forever) but no way it would take this long.

Verizon is my carrier, I use Desktop Manager Version 5.01.28. I download the OS files from "http://www.vzam.net/blackberry/". As I understand it there is a link to each vendor site from the support downloads site at blackberry.com. With the new desktop software you have to be sure and pick the OS install option, when prompted by App Loader, that runs directly from the files you downloaded rather than over the web. The thing that takes the longest is the device reboot, and if it is a blank device you can de-select the backup option
