Although the "phone only" setting has been interpreted in some responses on this forum as meaning exactly that, on my Bold, email causes an alert beep on this setting. The "Normal" setting is the one that does not beep when e-mail arrives. What is the general experience?

"Phone only" and "Normal" just labels for profiles.
You can set them to do whatever you want.
