To me a touchscreen just gets in the way and slows you down at least when it comes to BB's. Why does it matter when US carriers offer this with al of the radio options available you can get it unlocked and not worry about contract extensions.

The BGR site no longer has the pics or any news from 1/5/08 relating to the Vodafone Roadmap and specifically the phone called the 8920 on their site. Rather odd or did they hit something way to close to home.

I can pretty much guarantee that what I posted is a 9000 series. Whoever at vodaphone released those slides with their entire years product lineup is going to have fun looking for a new job.

Aparently they're now completely revamping their lineup due to this leak though.

If I'm wrong, then RIM employees are pretty good at making sure misinformation goes around. Seeing as RIM doesnt directly comment, most employees don't care if they give out info that is already speculated. The big thing is that they are not to give out specific hardware/software specs. most employees only know devices by code name anyways.

Ok then I'm confused! I've seen a bunch of info on this new bb that's coming out for vodafone in may! Is it going to be 3g or not? I saw it has hspda, but that's 3.5g, and from what I've read, the bb is edge + 3.5g! Can anyone clarify thay doubt? I'm really waiting for faster internet and file transfers here where there is no edge access. So yeah. Bb 8xxx = 3g or not? Thanks

HSDPA is 3g, Edge is technically 2.5g (same with EVDO. Though VZW and Sprint will call it 3g.) Technically, according to RIM, 3g allows simultaneous voice and data functionality, so any WI-FI berry is "3g". The new 8xxx series will be 3g with Wi-FI and GPS supposedly. Again though, its just a rumor at this point.

Those Vodafone PPT's are not exactly the most confidential of documents, they are often sent out to their indirect channel and any information past the next quarter it was produced in is nearly always inaccurate handsets are dropped new ones are added and release dates are changed, the specs are often not even finalised, the 8110 page had a picture of the 8100 and that's due to drop on my desk on the 28th of this month!

Again the codenames are not entirely secret, usually used to refer to a project before the commercial model name is decided. Ask your RIM buddy what the "Indy" is. Also from the "eyes only" presentation we got from RIM on the next "slick, consumer i-phone like device" has a much larger screen than the 9000/8920/8xxx pictures we have been seeing.

HSDPA is a layer on UMTS (GSM 3G). It's not possible to have HSDPA without a UMTS radio. I guess you could block non-HSDPA connections, but I can't see why anyone would do that. So the answer is: if it has HSDPA it has 3G.

To be fair, this looked pretty darn authentic to post. With that said, it was an internal roadmap document to Vodafone, so their information was likely not finalized, hence the 'xxx' part of the device series. I will agree that I think this is a 9000 series device, but there is a chance that it is an 8000 series device. I do not think this is the 8920 or the 8500 or whatever else these crazies have digged up from registered domain names, as RIM owns the entire blocks of the 8000 increments. The specs I've seen on the 9000, dated as of yesterday, did not indicate that it was equipped with UMTS capabilities. Who knows, though.

I don't think it's the 9000 series, but something probably in the 8000 series. I have to admit it does look sleek and stylish, just shows more of RIM migrating towards the consumer side and not the business side. They will always have their business features, but hey who says business has to be boring and dull... if this is what the new Berries are like, I like the direction that RIM is going at... as for the stories from Cooper, sorry I just don't think they're true, but thanks for posting anyways, stirred up a nice conversation and some thought into what the 9000 series might be and what that mysterious phone might be.

To be fair, Cooper's store is one block from RIM's Waterloo campus, so I'm pretty sure there's some - if not complete - truth in his postings. I've heard many, many stories that come from employees venturing out around the RIM campus and UW campus and the surrounding areas. I've seen pictures of devices months and months before they were launched or leaked by any carrier. It seems that most RIM employees in charge of various projects, such as BES or devices, would like to point fingers at carriers and large companies as the source for these NDA-protected leaks and make bold claims that people in Waterloo are fired for sourcing leaks or taking test devices out of the office (thus they are scared to do so and definitely not the source), but there's a lot of truth behind what Cooper says (else we wouldn't continue to hear stories about new device sightings, etc in and around Waterloo). Heck, they say that Mike Lazaridis gets prototype happy in Waterloo when visiting executives visit Waterloo and empties the treasure chest of R&D devices (per RIM employees not actual corporate executives who have visited).

Truthfully, I could care less what they call it. I just really hope it has HSDPA, which Jibi has cast into doubt from the specs he has seen.
