I always wondered why the Bold wasn't the 9800 or something along that line. Maybe they're trying to leverage a bit so they don't have to get to the Blackberry 10000 anytime soon.

8301 for the Javelin is stupid though. Make it the 8400.

Good thing I didn't post this by accident, too

Kidding (sort of), but 8301 is a terrible model number. I agree with 8305, or something else 83xx.

I can definitely see the KickStart and Seawolf devices being the 8210 and 8220, but I must agree that I don't think the 8301 would be a smart name. I thik the latter may have been an early name for it that has stuck around through some of the new information we got... of course, the same could be said of the other two devices.

...posting up more information here shortly.

They probably want 9000 and above to be for 3G devices. Javelin is really only a prettier Curve with high res display and the Kickstart was simply a flip phone Pearl. Nothing earth shattering with either one. The Bold, however, is a different animal and it needed a new series number for it.

-->BB 7130e-->Palm 700P-->BB 8830-->iphone-->BB 8310

We're still waiting prior to making that jump. I have it on good faith that the devices may still be named the 9100 and 9110, but I'm not sure. As with the Javelin, I have the model numbers from three separate sources, so...

There is a system, or at least there was in the post 8700 era.

xx00 - base model
xx10 - GPS
xx20 - wifi
xx30 or xx03 - CDMA model

There were a few outliers though.

Nextel 7520 didnt have wifi despite its xx20.
T-Mobile 8705 was a one off hearing aid compatible model.

Before the 8700 there was a system as well, but due to my young age I dont know it!

72xx - traditional bb form factor
77xx - extra tall screen
???

The 6000 and 7000 series (sans 7100) were as follows:

77xx - color, large screen
72xx - color, normal screen
71xx - color, SureType, small screen
67xx - b/w, large screen
62xx - b/w, normal screen
xx10, xx30 - dual-band 1900/900mhz
xx80 - tri-band 850/1800/1900mhz
xx90 - quad-band 850/900/1800/1900mhz
x510 - iDEN, 16MB RAM
x520 - iDEN, 32MB RAM
xx50 - CDMA
