1 - You are asking an oft repeated question. My opinion is it is very subjective, depending on YOUR wants and needs.

I think in terms of categories. I need a local search app, a travel itinerary app, a backup mapping and navigation app in addition to blackberry maps. For these I right now like Poynt, TripCase, and Bing and Blackberry Traffic. I also have, and recommend, Pandora (streaming music with personally created stations, but only available in USA), blackberry twitter app, and blackberry podcast app.

2 - If that is a employer-owned blackberry on a BES, you may not be able to install any apps. At the very least, you need to get wise on the company policy, if you haven't do so.

Go to BB APp World and get some of the top 25 favs and you should be all good there and then you can get rid of the one that you have not used since install.
Good luck

OOOOO, a really cool one is Cardstar
It take all of your annoying VIP, Customer rewards cards, Gym cards etc, and turns them into electronic barcodes on your phone. It is very neat and takes about two inches out a wallet or 50 key tags off your key ring.

From looking at the site it seems that the merchant cannot scan the barcode from your blackberry. Is this correct?

Some important apps :
CaptureIt, capturing the screen of your device, where ever you are. You can capture any transaction on your bb as a proof.
Advanced Device Lock, choose any apps & lock it with your own password.
BerryWeather, updating weather info in many locotions.
QuickLaunch, make many shortcuts in variant categories (apps, web, phone etc).
BerryPopup, popup your message, email, pin msg, when there's a new one. N directly, can reply, close etc.
GoogleMap, find a place/addresses.
You can find further info for these apps in AppWorld : Navita translator, RestartMe, Alarm Clock, DataBackup.
