Default Newb at the bb and have a few questions.

Please Login to Remove!

I have just bough an unlocked 9300 curve 3g. however, in my country we do not have the blackberry service, so the phone really can not do much. We have an edge connection, and the phone came with opera installed, so I can surf on that. Does anyone else use this 5.1 version of opera? The curser moves much too quickly for you to select anything. Also, can someone give me a link to download the Google maps and mail apps and any other apps that might work in my country please? I have searched but the links posted in the FAQ thread do not work. Thanks
I need:

GPS
Gmail
Units Converter
Browser
MSN messenger app
Facebook app

MSN and Facebook require blackberry data service, so will not work.

On the cursor speed, look in device options. Maybe the icon looks like a wrench, or gears or something similar. Look in screen/keyboard, and adjust the sensitivity.

On the apps, you are going to have a rough time. You can't download and install anything over the air (OTA) without a blackberry data service plan. You are going to have to find or make desktop downloads and install that way. I can't be much help on that question.

I don't think Google Maps or Gmail will work without a BB data plan either. You could probably access gmail using Opera Mini via gmail.com however.

Did you see this in the FAQ? How to use BlackBerry on Generic Data Plan - BlackBerryFAQ

I read the FAQ but i was under the impression that gmail and maps work, the links in that FAQ are just dead.

They key point for you is whether or not the app uses the BlackBerry/RIM network. You can count on this being the case for any app that utilizes the push technology or any app written by RIM for BlackBerry. If the app only requires the carrier APN and you have that set up, then odds are you're good to go.

what is the carrier APN? Do you know of any list of apps that have been tested to work without the bb/rim network?

From OP I gather you already have the APN configured as opera mini is working for you.

For reference, open options > advanced options > TCP/IP and take a look

Some developers, such as opera mini, have a list of APN info by carrier on their website. I remember the opera mini list looked pretty thorough.
