Question Rogers 9500 vs Vodafone 9500 on AT&T? - 10-16-2008, 02:06 PM

Currently an AT&T customer on a family plan w/ my wife. Have been PATIENTLY waiting for the Bold and now have my eyes on the Storm. After reading through every post I could find on the "Will the Storm work on AT&T" topic, it seems that the Vodafone version of the 9500 only supports UMTS 2100 which won't work on AT&T's 3G network (1900 I believe). So I could get an unlocked Vodafone 9500 but would be limited to EDGE speeds on AT&T, correct?

So now that it is [edit] rumored [edit] that Rodgers is coming out w/ the 9500, does anyone know if their version will be exactly the same as Vodafone's or is it different and will it work on AT&T's 3G network?

If not, I may switch to Verizon and pick up the 9530. I may even do a month to month plan and if AT&T ever releases a 3G storm, switch back and eBay my VZW Storm.

Any thoughts on whether Verizon's EVDO is better or worse than AT&T's 3G network in Manhattan? Who knows what is causing the Bold delay but there seems to be a lot of speculation that AT&T's 3G network isn't up to snuff. However I have also heard that it should be faster than EVDO. From a practical standpoint, which would be better in NYC?

TIA

Eric

No formal announcement yet of a Storm for Rogers.

To answer your question the Rogers version will work on the North American HSDPA/3G networks if/when they come out with one.

There is one in development but no specs released yet.

Rogers would not release a Storm without NA HSDPA.

Rumor my friend...listen to the call. This is a standard Rogers response.

Wasn't sure if Rodgers HSDPA was the same as AT&T - but I guess they are.

Thanks

Wishful thinking I suppose. Honestly didn't even listen to the recording - saw a thread on that other not to be named forum and assumed people had checked it out.

BTW - why on earth would RIM make the 3G radio on the 9500 (GSM version) 2100 MHz only? Why not do what they did w/ the Bold and make it 2100 / 1900 / 850 MHz so it works everywhere?

Seems like it will create a ton of confusion.

The more I have been reading about EVDO, it really does seem inferior to AT&T's 3G network - can't do simult voice and data, slower theoretical speeds, etc.

Thanks for the link. Doesn't make a ton of sense. Clearly could see why it is a good thing for Verizon but not sure why RIM would do it.

So if you are in the US your options are - get the VZW version which runs on EVDO, pay a ton of money for an unlocked Vodafone version that will only run EDGE or wait until Rodgers or AT&T release a 3G version of the Storm - judging by how quickly AT&T is rolling out the Bold that could be 2010.

Oh well.

it would be nice for Rogers to have the BOLD and STORM & the MAGNUM before AT&T even gets the Bold. I guess AT&T does not have true 3G to support these devices.

lol...we'll forgive him since he's a foreigner. Wait...maybe we're the foreigners.

in any case, any updates on if/when its coming to rogers. Last I read was it was expected in may '09. Hope that is way off!

Waiting till jan or feb is fine but may...that would be painfull.

It is not "BS" in any way shape or form. This device is real and will be out in '09.

Jason, you seem to be "in the know".

Any update on the Storm coming to Rogers? Does the FCC approval of the GSM-only version indicate anything in this regards?

If so, what do you think: Jan-Feb or more like next summer?

Thanks...
