Thumbs up Storm 9530 UNLOCKED and works with North America GSM Carriers - 11-24-2008, 02:18 PM

Sorry for doubting you all, I have proof in my hand that it works on North America GSM Carrier. I had my VZW 9530 unlocked and inserted the AT&T SIM I have and viola, it shows AT&T under carrier and I was able to make a call. Once I get home I will insert my TMO SIM card, which I have in my 8320 and start using the Storm on TMO's network. I know you need proof, I will upload pictures once I get home. But take my word for now, it works, and VZW has the unlock code don't let them tell you otherwise.

Did Verizon give you the unlock code?

Here is what you need to do:

*Don't try this if you don't have the unlock code from VZW as random numbers will not work

1) Call Verizon, ask for blackberry global support, tell them you need the the unlock code to use a pre-paid sim card overseas, it is the truth for me.
2) With the VZW SIM inserted
3) Click on manage connections, select turn all connections off
4) Go to Settings Menu, Options, Advanced Options and then SIM Card.
5) Hit the menu button and select show keyboard
6) Type in mepd using the keyboard
7) Type in mep2 another screen pops up for the code,
8) Enter the code, remember you ONLY have 10 chances to get it right*
9) Press the enter key
10) A message will appear saying code accepted
11) Turn device off, remove VZW SIM card and pop any sim in
11) Turn the phone back on
12) Go to manage connections, select gsm and there you go

Same with the 8830 i had. They prefer not to, you will have to accept a terms and agreement for charges occurred to your account and VZW has no liability in them.

I just spoke to Global Support for Verizon and they claim they don't have unlock codes for the Storm. So not sure how people are getting this done. Any help here would be great since it would be nice to get this phone unlocked before I leave the next time I leave the country.

They told me the same thing first. Then I told the rep my friend got his unlocked. She said she'd look into it and call me back. You can imagine my surprise when she actually did. I told her is this a prank call, and I didn't believe her until she actually gave me the unlock code.

Here is the proof as promised. If you need more let me know. When I logged on TMO's BIS it asked me if I wanted to activate the new device, I said yes, then it pushed all the email service books to the new device. Piece of cake.

I also changed the TCP APN setting to wap.voicestream.com, everything seems to work (voice, email, and browser) but when I do a diagnostic test i get a "radio data activation: no" and the test stops. Any ideas??

so what are you doing with your verizon account? Cancelling it? without returning the device? Or was this only an experiment?

Wow, this is my first post here. But that is sweet.

Did you have to modify the servicebooks or after it was unlocked, it was just a piece of cake?
thanks

I haven't made up my mind yet. Service in my home area sucks for all wireless carriers (TMO, VZW, and ATT), I need wifi (i.e. Curve 8320 for UMA,only TMO) to make and receive calls at home.

Except for the Radio Activation: No issue, everything was very easy. All the service books were pushed to my device when I logged on the TMO account via desktop.

Unlocked phones are selling on eBay for $1000, thats tempting too. What do you think VZW will do if I canceled and kept the phone, I am a new customer and I am still within the 30 trial period.

Can anyone list the differences between using it on Tmobile instead of Verizon?

I mean in terms of how the phone runs, (Besides no 3G and not as good service.)

EDGE is slower than Verizon's 1XEv if that helps any. As for the phone responsiveness, no change for me.

Unlocked the phone by calling Verizon and tested with a T-Mobile sim card. Was able to make a call. IT WORKS!
