i am new to the forum. i got my storm monday (12/8/) (and just incase you are wondering, i ordered it 11/29.).

i have one question that i have not been able to find an answer to by searching the forum. i know the phone currently does not have wifi, but i am wishing it did. i used the wifi on my ipod touch and i have done some speed comparisons, and the ipod wifi is much faster for me.

my question is, could an update be done to make the storm wifi compatible if they choose to do so?

No. WiFi is a hardware feature. You can't add hardware to the Storm.

I am afraid that soupandsandich is correct ... There is no hardware inside the device that supports wifi.

thats too bad. i was afriad of that. the g3 network isnt terrible. but the including wifi seems like an obvious decision IMO. but thats not my profession. so, i will assume it was the smart choice.

There are many thoughts on this ... While wifi is much faster I have found that EVDO Rev A works just fine for me. I have no complaints (at the moment at least)

My understanding is that WiFi uses a large amount of power and would drain the battery significantly faster. I used to have an iPhone and turning off the WiFi would make a big difference.

Perhaps RIM figured that the typical "on the go" BB users would favor longer battery life over a WiFi connection and choose to leave out the WiFi antenna and chip to keep the size of the Storm down or at least use the space that would have been needed for the WiFi antenna / chip for something else.
