No, I have this problem as well. Really kind of sucks, it is definitely a design issue. I have been avoiding holding the Storm up with my shoulder.

I have the same problem but if I hold it on my left ear, I don't have a problem. Guess I dont press as hard,

BTW I have solved the problem. I bought the new Jawbone. Now I have both hands and dont worry about hitting the Mute button.

Same problem here. Dealing with it for now. Hoping for a way to disable it with some future upgrade.

Very annoying, but ultimately good for me. Everytime I can recall I have dropped my phone it as been due to holding it this way. Now I don't do it, and I haven't dropped my Storm!

The iPhone just seems to "know" when the device is up against your face and it appears to disable the screen until you pull it away. At least that's been my experience. I think RIM forgot to do something similar and the screen stays active.

A BlueTooth headset would certainly be a good choice.

I've noticed that if I hold the phone on the right side of my face I'm more likely to hit the mute button. It's a bit of a pain.

How do you guys do that anyway? I have a SLVR before this and I think my neck would be completely sideways if I tried to do that with this phone.

You know what the friggin easiest solution would be?!

So the Storm touch screen has lots and lots of sensors under the surface to sense our touch, right? Well... right now, when the storm senses a small heat source against its screen... it sees it as our finger... and acts accordingly. ie: it will highlight the screen blue... etc.

But when we hold the phone using our cheek and shoulder... the storm senses a large heat source covering a large area of the screen. And right now, it seems like the Storm still sees that as a finger...and either selects the mute or speakerphone button.

But what it SHOULD do when it senses a LARGE heat source contacting the screen, is assume that it's our face, or leg (when in the pocket) and simply have it lock the screen until that large heat source is no longer there...ie: when we put the storm to our face = screen feels large heat source and locks... and when we take it away from our face = screen no longer feels large heat source and unlocks.

I can't believe RIM didn't think about this.

Because you use the left side of your shoulder and face the buttons are opposite of one another when on a call.

This is a big issue since I am on support calls. I have caught myself explaining issues an then having to re-explain them with the mute off... duh...

I forgot would be a good update for the "things to add to the next os update" thread.

Stuff like this really makes you wonder if they even tested the phone with real live people before they put it on the market. I mean between this and the ridiculously slow transition from portrait to landscape mode, why release it?

My wife finds that she hits the speakerphone with her face.

Probably this is a good way to teach people to use headsets.

I hope some type of fix comes out for this. I was in a quiet area when I put someone on speaker. Very embarrassing!

RIM could have learned a few things such as this by just going through the menus of a Treo. Palm has had an option forever that disables the touch screen while on a call. And also on an incoming ring. You would have thought that since they were releasing and making such a big deal about the "First Touchscreen Blackberry" that they would have covered these issues that other manufacturers learned about...

Exactly. I'm having the same issue with my cheek always hitting the mute button. I hope RIM can get this fixed in upcoming OS releases...

I'm having this same issue. It's really unfortunate because I like the Storm but I can't have a phone I can't talk on.

I got around this by setting a pretty quick backlight timeout and using Autolock. Just set Autolock to also lock the screen while on a call. As soon as the backlight turns off, the screen will lock. Not the best solution, but works for me.
