Default People Say my Voice is Muffled

Please Login to Remove!

People are saying my voice sounds muffled when I am talking to them. I have a silicone case surrounding the phone, however I removed it and people said there was no improvement. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I had perfect quality with 5 bars on 1XEV access. What can I do to fix this issue?

Also does anyone else's storm screen rotate whenever you put the phone down? Is there a sensitivity setting or something?

Thanks,
Brad

Wirelessly posted (Storm 9530)

I'm not sure on the muffled issue, maybe something is in the mic hole?

My Storm does like to rotate when I put it down, I think it has to do with the angle I'm holding it as I'm setting it down. I've learned to just set it straight down and it seems to stay in portrait.

I had the same problem, speakerphone was better (or headset) but the regular handset mode was no good. VZW replaced the device and the problem is gone. I suspect it was a hardware / assembly problem with the mic on some of the earliest ones that shipped, I got mine the day it launched. New one is much better, nice clean sound like a normal VZW phone should be.

I have two Storms. One has the problem you describe and the other does not. Verizon is also sending me a replacement for the defective phone. I hope the new one is ok.

Same problem here. Reported to my company. My wife's boss just got his and he has the same problem. Either there was a run of bad mics or bad assembly.

You can confirm the problem by using the earbud / mic that is included with the phone. I just wonder how many people have a bad mic and don't even realize it.

Do a battery pull and I found that it fixed the issue. When its low on memory that happens, it will help to do a .83 upgrade, since the upgrade the issue has not happened.

yea, my little finger tends to find its way over the microphone hole. Watch where your fingers are.

I am having the same problem as well. I will try the battery pull and see if that works if not, I will be requesting a replacement....its too expensive not to be able to make a simple call.

Just an update on my muffled sounding voice. I walked into a Verizon store in my local mall and they swapped it with another one without incident. I was surprised at the good customer service I received because others have reported rude treatment while in the Verizon store. I swapped the micro Sandisk card, they copied all of my other settings and all I needed to do was reactivate it on the BES server. People say I sound perfectly clear now. So, I would have to say there are a small number of phones that have a problem with the microphone. Also, it may be just me, but the touch screen on my replacement behaves so much better than my first Storm.

Hmm. I just got my Storm yesterday and someone mentioned I sounded muffled. I wondering if I have the same issue. Did anyone who reads this post get there phone with .75 on it or .65? Mine came with .75.

I have had mine for less than a week now, and been on .75, .99, and .103 as of today. I definitely sound muffled to the person on the other end with all 3 of these versions. And I have left myself voicemails on a landline number to test this, and compared by also calling the same landline from an LG phone and leaving test voicemails.

I know it is NOT the mic in the phone - a simple test is to use the Voice Notes recorder - they come out loud, crisp, and clear.

Also, the included headset/mic from RIM as well as bluetooth headsets also sound muffled. This must be something in the firmware.

I personally think it's the background noise filtering.

Put your finger over the little hole on the top of the phone while you are talking and see if it goes away.

You may be on to something. It was difficult for me to tell for sure. It could be that the muffled sound doesn't happen on every call. In addition, I am sitting in a quiet office when I am doing this and there isn't any background noise, other than that microphone up top picking up my voice.

I think you are correct. Just ran my tests again and it sounds far less muffled when I cover that hole at the top of the phone, and more muffled again as soon as I remove it.

Every time someone says I am muffled I am usually in an environment with NO background noise. I will put my finger over that hole and they will say that I sound better.

It could just be a fluke, but it seems to make sense.

My wife and I both have the same problem. Sound quality is muffled from the microphone. Sound quality is much better from speakerphone and excellent from Bluetooth. Verizon replaced my unit and it is a little better, but not much.

I upgraded my OS to 4.7.0.103 and the sound is improved but it is still not great. This is a beta OS and I hope they will resolve this issue once the OS goes gold. The problem has to be software as I assume the microphone used for the speakerphone and handset is the same.

That being said, 4.7.0.103 is much better ... the accelerometer works very well. The OS is fast. It is more stable than .75, but it still freezes and reboots once in a while. If I set the unit to lock while holstered, there are times that the unit will not unlock. I since turned that feature off. The problem can also be related to using TalkLock.

I don't want to exchange my unit again, as I will have to pay another $3.95 for shipping on a replacement Invisible Shield.

I would wait until there is a newer OS to see if we can get that great Verizon call quality; it is definitely getting better.

I've noticed a difference between the call quality coming from my friend's storm made in Canada, and mine made in Mexico. I took mine back to the store and exchanged it for one made in Hungary (they didn't have any Canadians to exchange) and it still sounds worse than the one made in Canada.

The issue is not that -- the real fix is to turn off the Automatic Volume control under Enhanced Audio. That clears it up completely. I had the exact same issues and once I turned the feature off, all was good!

Phone\Options\Enhanced Audio\Automatic Volume Control\Disabled

This will completely eliminate the muffled sound to the receiver; it really works!
