Question N00bie.. Couple of questions

Please Login to Remove!

Hi guys

My contract is coming to an end with 3, thank god, and i have been looking around on what phone to get next. I have been thinking about getting the iPhone 3G but now i have seen the Blackberry Storm and really starting to change my mind towards that. There are a few questions i would like to ask.

1) Can you get 3rd apps for the storm?
2) Has the lag stopped when using the storm (seen vids on youtube)
3) When using Google maps on it, can you pinpoint your location?
4) Can you use own ringtone and message tone?
5) can you customize the storm with themes, wallpapers etc?

I have to admit the storm does look alot smarter and better then the iPhone but the only thing it lacks is Wi-Fi, but who needs that with unlimited internet usage on vodafone.

Hope someone can answer my questions.

Many thanks in advance :D

Yes. Some decent ones. More coming.

Some lag here, nothing I can't get past

3) When using Google maps on it, can you pinpoint your location?
Some say yes, some say not. Your mileage may vary.

4) Can you use own ringtone and message tone?
Yes.

5) can you customize the storm with themes, wallpapers etc?
Themes coming, no new ones yet... wallpaper all you like.

KBV1,

I used a Curve for about 3 weeks before getting the Storm. I have to admit, as an avid MAC user, I was set to cross over to AT&T for the iPhone. Two major issues stopped me from going to the iPhone.

#1. AT&T service is notoriously bad in my area. Most users get bad service inside my office building. I get uninterrupted service inside my office, including the elevator. Verizon simply offers better coverage overall.

#2. It's almost unbelieveable, but you can't send MMS messages from an iPhone - picture attached to a SMS (text message). You must send an email for photo attachments. I am a huge MMS message sender and use this option extensively at work and off the clock. That was pretty much a deal breaker for me.

Ill do my best to answer your 5 questions and I am sure some of the gurus on here are going to add on even more.

1. Right now there are limited 3rd party apps but the list is growing and will surely be as comprehensive as it is with other phones. Crackberry already has a nice roster.

2. The recent OS upgrade did a lot to end lag. However there are also other tips within this forum that boost the Storm's performance in various areas.

3. I do not use Google maps but there are a lot of posts in this forum that will answer pretty much everything you need to know.

4. You can assign different ringtones for callers, different alert notification sounds, and download ringtones. There are also websites such as Stormgrounds that will email ringtones to your phone. So far I can do everything with the Storm that I did with my other phones in this respect.

5. Yes, you can customize your themes, wallpapers, etc. I have done so already. Stormgrounds has plenty and you can even create your own if you have the technical saavy. Much of that is discussed in this forum. Folks also post some of their own.

I highly recommend the Storm. As with any other new model, the Storm has its issues but RIM is constantly working to remedy the situation. I hear a new OS will be released soon, possibly later this month.

Hope that helps. Surely there will be more advice and answers. This forum has been incredible to me and you will learn much in a short period of time if you visit here often. There are many knowledgeable people who provide a wealth of information.

KBV1,

1. Go to Crackberry and check out the apps for the Storm. The list grows daily and forum members have posted links for other apps. Just scroll down the post listing. Talk-lock is one of them.

2. Yes, you can sync the Storm with your email just like any other Blackberry or cellular phone. I have Gmail and Yahoo synced.

3. Yes, that is a headphone jack. You can load music into the phone. I don't but many do.

4. If I understand the question right, phone 2 phone SMS texting does not offer the chat icons. But you can always enter them in the original format ;)
However, the Blackberry messenger does (30 different smiley icons). I've used the BB messenger to talk with other Blackberries on Verizon, T-mobile, and Sprint. For some reason, I am unable to do it with Blackberries on AT&T, but I think that is carrier issue for all Blackberries on AT&T.

Some are free, some you pay for. Just look around out there, someone is always sharing.

apps that are commercial, you have to pay for.

apps that are free, no. I know that sounds smart, but...

At the app store, I guess so.

Others, free. Like TalkLock, Solitaire, FaceCall, BBWeather, WeatherBug, Beyond411, GoogleMaps, VyMail, DocumentsToGo Standard version, QuickPull, CaptureIt, etc.

1. If you go to getjar.com you can find thousands of free apps for the storm. Not too many good ones yet but I'm guessing thats because it just came out not too long ago...

2. I upgraded my storm to the .99 beta OS and the lag for the camera is pretty much gone and i didnt notice too much lag with my phone anywhere else.

3. I have google maps which can pin point your location within a few hundred meters not sure if there is a way to get it exactly. If you are just looking to pin point your location without getting directions anywhere trapster pinpoints you pretty much exactly maybe a meter or 2 off. And if you want directions nav4all is a free voice navigation program which also can pinpoint your location.

4. you can use your own ringtones

5. There are no current new themes for the storm that I know of but I have heard and have read in a few posts that it won't be long till you see some poppin up.

My mom has the iphone and like stated above you cannot send MMS messages. She almost got rid of the iphone and went back to her old 2004 LG flip phone because she was so upset about it (She obviously uses MMS a lot). Don't know much more about the iphone but my mom has said a few times she wishes she had my phone.

Sorry if i repeated anything. I hope this helps.

thank you for all your replies they are all really helping. I'm really gutted about not being able to send MMS or even record video on the iPhone thats why im going away from it. The storm is cheaper also then the iPhone but then again from everything i have read the storm is better also. There is one app i would like and that is a "shazam" app. You put your mic to any music and it pics it up and find the artist and title to the song... Is there a app like this as yet?

Thanks
