Default Storm Questions - Newbie

Please Login to Remove!

Hello all, my first post to the board. I'm due for an upgrade with Verizon and considering the Storm ($99.). But I have a few questions first. Hoping someone can answer them for me.
Will the GPS on it work with Google maps?
Call quality, incoming and outgoing, good or bad?
Not much of a text-er, but would reply to e-mail, keyboard, good or bad.
Is Facebook accessible to it?

Thanks for any and all help.

For GoogleMaps, you will need a BB data plan. Google should work.

Call quality really depends on the connection and your location. Hard to say one way or the other. I have had good luck with my BBs on ATT.

Facebook is causing some problems with the BB world. Do a search and see what you can find.

Google maps works for some, not for me, I use BB Maps, works great.

Call quality is great in my area.

Keyboard is very good with OS.99.

Face books works fine also. They are hopefully coming out with a new and improved one soon, but it works the way it is supposed to.

Google Maps doesn't work for VZW Storm's. Google themselves have said don't expect a solution any time soon. Apparently there is in-fighting betwixt Google and VZW with the result being consumers loose.

There are some apps that can get a GPS loc and then call Googlemaps such as SignalLoc, but it is patchwork at best. There are tons of discussion on this here at BBF and elsewhere. As far as free services, Nav4All and BBMaps work great. Other apps using the GPS that I've used and work for the Storm are Trapster, Beyond411 and Weatherbug.

My call quality has been reported consistently as excellent.

Facebook works fine for me, although the GUI could have more utility and be better.

I find the click-through screen fast and accurate. For me it is a joy to use.

If you can get a Storm on a 30-day trial (Buyer's Remorse).. do it. That's the best way to size up the device and not be stuck with something you don't like. I'd wager you will pleased.

Best of luck!

To clarify, you can download and install Google Maps and it runs and works great. The only problem is you can't get a GPS signal in it. You will however get your approximate location (within 1500 feet) based on cell tower triangulation.

In regards to your other questions:

Call quality is fantastic for me.

Keyboard is a little weird (and perhaps intimidating) at first, but after a few days to a week it becomes second nature and is very usable, in both portrait or landscape, in my opinion.

There is a decent Facebook app for the Storm and you can also use the full HTML browser to access Facebook if needed.
