Default VyMail vs. YouMail

Please Login to Remove!

I shouldn't be struggling over this as I am, but when I searched for new apps for my 9530 Storm, VyMail was an attractive one for VVM purposes, and since it said I need to have YouMail installed first, I did just that. I set up YouMail (minimally) using my assigned password, and also installed VyMail, but performed no additional configurations. I read the threads here for each, and am still trying to differentiate the two and see what I need to do to possibly get free VVM -- is that even possible?

Since I've installed YouMail, my voicemail messages seem to be in limbo, of sorts. Actually, I've DLed them...I think I read that VyMail automatically DLs them, and also that with YouMail, you have to use a headset to listen to your voicemail messages.

I have a few questions:

It looks as though VyMail cannot be used without YouMail -- is this correct?

What does VyMail provide that YouMail does not?

Why would you use YouMail without VyMail?

Youmail is the Voicemail system. Vymail is an app to easily play the messages on your blackberry. You need to tell Vymail your phone number and pin to have it automatically retrieve messages from Youmail. It will play your messages through whatever you choose, speaker, handset, or headset.

It works flawlessly for me and the two combined are much better than what Verizon offers.

So YouMail is just a utility to view your VM and play the sounds files over the internet?

After installing YouMail with VyMail over the top of it, should I configure YouMail in any specific manner, or will configuring VyMail override all of those settings?

To clear things up. The YouMail service (account) needs to be setup before you can use either VVM app on your device. You do not need to install the YouMail app to get VyMail to work.

Here are the major differences for me so far:

YouMail VVM App:
Much higher battery use
Downloads VMs to your phone in the background (to phone or media card)
Ugly app icon
No banner ribbon or App Icon notification

VyMail App:
No banner ribbon icon
Has App Icon Notification
Does not download VMs in the background, only ondemand
On the Fly audio target (speaker, handset, headset, bluetooth)

In the end I have decided to stick with VyMail

Shaun, that clears up a lot! I'm going to uninstall YouMail, configure and play around with VyMail and go from there.

I think I noticed that with YouMail, you pay for the VVM service. Do you also pay with VyMail?

I believe both applications are free to use! With the YouMail application for Blackberry you can upload your contact list to the YouMail web site! YouMail cannot play messages over your speaker phone on OS .75, I don't know if VyMail can! VyMail is a slightly smaller application! They both work great!

You mail automatically downloads your messages so they are there if you no longer have service. It works for me since I take the train and I'm in the tunnels. After the day I can listen to the voicemails that the YouMail Visual Voice Mail App has stored on my memory card.

I love both and used both without issue for a long time. I notice no additional batter drain with the newest version of the YouMail App.

Yes the YouMail App button is ugly, but it's still a beta and they are obviously working on it as it's updated twice in the last week.

Both are free.

I have .75 and YouMail plays messages over my speaker, I know plenty of others have reported you can't but for some strange reason mine works fine.

Best of Luck!

The basic YouMail VM service is free, neither app costs money. You do have the option to upgrade your YouMail account to remove ads, and also get voice to text transcription. This option does have a related cost.

Sorry, the app may be a beta, but they have been using the same horrible icon since they released their web shortcut last year. It is not a priority apparently.

I wish they would do the same as Viigo, and update to a RIM design specific icon.

Alright, this is a bit of a trainwreck for me.
Again, I initially created my YouMail account, and installed the YouMail app. I could see my VMs, DL them, but they wouldn't play through the handset. Fine, whatever...

I went to the YouMail site and viewed the details of my VMs, called the 714# to listen to them, though I knew that wasn't the only way.

Then I installed VyMail, and created this thread to figure out some detailed info.

I uninstalled YouMail, then realized there were some messages leftover, so I reinstalled YouMail, but it didn't see them (probably because they were "old" to YouMail). Fine...I called the 714# to handle them.

This morning I got a call with a VM, but I loaded each app and neither saw it. I called the 714# and handled it.

At this point, I'm sure I could deactivate then reactivate YouMail, uninstall and reinstall both, and go from there.
I just have two questions:
In my opinion, VVM is being able to read your VM messages in text format. Do either of these offer that service for free? If not, what is really so special about these apps?

Second, I have the message indicator stating that I have 1 message, and I think it's been there since I installed these apps. This might mean there's a message in limbo that was there before I installed YouMail and VyMail. What might I do to track down this message, aside from uninstalling both and deactivating? Although, that might be best for me right now, to just start over...

I think your confusion is in one fundamental area. You are using YouMail Voicemail service. You have installed two apps that pull information from the YouMail service via API. One app was built by a 3rd party (Joe Krill/VyMail) and the other by YouMail themselves (YouMail Visual Voice Plus).

VVM is the ability to see your voicemails in a message list rather than a call in service.

What you are referring to is voice-to-text transcription. YouMail does not offer this service for free, and only the YouMail Visual Voice Plus App will display the transcribed voicemail (text).

Many people prefer being able to SEE their voicemails as opposed to making a call and going through menu prompts.

Neither app would cause this. This is the result of either your Carrier having a voicemail in their system for you, or the YouMail service needs to be refreshed.

Assuming you have pulled the battery; search the forums for "YouMail MWI refresh code". If that fails, call your carrier to reset your MWI with them.

MWI = Message Waiting Indicator

Does it work better on the Storm? I believe the first version required you to be in compatibility mode which anoyed the @#$#@ out of me.

That definitely answers my questions. Thanks!

I sent a refresh text message to 52894, and I received a response stating that replies could not be sent to other YouMail members, or something to that effect.

Also, has anyone noticed that the VyMail icon's new message indicator seems to remain after all messages have been read, and the LED flashes for some time after reading all new messages as well? Even with other "mark as read" options being tested...

This is normal. I have confirmed with YouMail Support that this does not mean the message didn't make it, and is normal. You should still receive a refresh of the MWI.

Yes, this happens quite often, and negates the inclusion of the feature.
