I took my SIM card out of my storm (unlocked) and put it in my 8830 (inactive and locked on Verizon)? Sorry I am a newbie

Not in North America..

The 8830 does not work on North American GSM frequencies. The SIM card has no impact on the CDMA (Verizon) part of the phone.
