Default Notification Profiles bug & Workaround

Please Login to Remove!

I've recently (five days ago) replaced my 8330 Curve (had it just over a year, very happy with it) with a Storm 9530.

I wanted the significantly larger screen, and thought that the Surepress would actually be a functional feature that I would like. My interest in the Storm at this specific time was driven by a) the fact that VZW had just released the .148 update that fixed a lot of issues with the handset, b) the Storm V2 is likely not due out for at least six months, and c) I could do it all for a pretty reasonable cost.

I picked up the phone on Saturday, did a handset transfer using my BB Desktop software, and was on my way. Other than a couple of quirks from some of the apps (I needed to reinstall them), things seemed fine.

When I started the work week, I learned that everything was NOT fine. My phone was making all sorts of audible alerts for notifications while the phone was in the holster (yes, it's a real BB holster, not a knock-off). This was not good as it was interrupting meetings.

I'll keep things short by simply stating that I did a lot of research, experimenting, and talking with VZW tech support and store folks - no one could figure out why my phone was not behaving as it had been configured to (and I did receive confirmation from VZW that I did have it configured correctly).

My specific problem: I clicked the BB Menu key to bring up the full list of icons. I then chose the Sounds option. I opened "Choose Ring Tones/Alerts" (my phone was already set to the Normal profile - you may want to set this first). For the "Phone" setting, I chose an MP3 on my SD card as my default ring tone, set the volume to 6, chose "No" for "Sound in Holster", LED On, Vibration Custom, Length Medium, Count 3, In/Out of Holster In Only.

I went on to set "built-in" notifiers for email, txt, MMS, Level 1, and PIN. All of these were configured to either be "Silent" or had a volume level with "No" for Sound in Holster. All were set with custom options for Vibration, duration Long, and different counts (1 for email, 2 for txt/mms/level 1/pin).

Out of the holster, everything seems to work fine. In the holster, the vibrations are enabled (clearly indicating that the phone is recognizing that it is in the holster) and work properly. The "QUIRK" is that all notification still give their audible alert in the holster!

This was driving me completely nuts, and I was not able to figure it out. Neither was anyone else. Until tonight, that is.

If you set the "Sound in Holster" option for the Phone to "Yes", all audible notifications in the holster will be heard, regardless of what they are individually set to. Only when the Phone's option is set to "No" can you then control the other items by themselves.

Ok. So, that solves one problem, but introduces another. "What if I want my phone to ring while it's in the holster?"

Well, guess what? It doesn't matter if you set the phone option to "Yes" or "No" - it will always ring in the holster.

I've reported this to VZW as a bug as of a couple of hours ago. They are going to forward the information to their internal staff, who are supposedly going to forward it on to RIM for corrective action.

Well, after having a feeling that I had this "figured out" and had a successful workaround, it's acting up again. I didn't change any of my notification settings, and it started making noise in the holster again after changing the profile to Phone Calls Only and back to Normal.

I did a battery pull, no help.

I changed the setting for the phone notification for "Sound in Holster" to "Yes" and then back to "No" and it seems to be working properly again.

To me, it seems very clear that there's an issue with the reading of the configuration settings. A) It doesn't appear that the individual settings are being read BEFORE the setting for the "Phone" and B) It appears that there is an issue with reading the settings when entering a profile from a different profile.

The saga continues.

I stopped off at a VZW store today to have a technician look at my phone. I spoke with a sales clerk, who talked to a tech (never once did *I* have the opportunity to talk to the tech).

The tech basically said that he felt it was the handset, and that I should have it swapped for a new one. The sales clerk was kind enough to reconfigure his Storm and test, and it seemed to work correctly.

Back to the Authorized Reseller where I bought it. The guy was perfectly happy to swap the handset, redo all of the rebate paperwork, migrate all of my data (which he had to do like four time because it wouldn't work properly for some reason). He stayed well beyond closing to help get me situated.

He said that, in his opinion, I was going to have the exact same issue with a new handset. Well, he was right. I got home, started testing it a little, and immediately recognized that the same exact problem was present on this handset.

The handset was swapped with another brand new one - no refurbished models or anything like that. The new handset has an absolutely terrible feel to the screen - it does not click nicely like the one I just gave up.

Apparently, VZW had planned software updates in March and September. The March one was delayed to the end of May, which means that the September one will be delayed a couple of months as well. I'm not waiting that long for this to get fixed.

Buh-bye Storm. Until these VERY basic problems are fixed, it's simply not ready for prime time. I can't work with this phone as it absolutely does not do what I need it to.

I'm never content with "not knowing", so I continued digging, and I believe I may have discovered exactly how to create the problem, which means there's a way to stop it (if I'm right).

The phone seems to "respect" the setting for Sound in Holster if you choose anything but Custom for the Vibrate setting. If you choose Custom for the Vibrate setting and select your own duration, number, and such, it will sound audible alerts in the holster. If you choose Off, On, or In Holster Only, it seems to work fine.

The major downside is that you can't choose how many vibrations you want the phone to give for the different types of messages.

Here's a trick I just used to get around this problem: I created a custom profile with all my options, then set the "Sound in Holster" to No, and "Vibrate" to Custom, 10, long, in the custom profile, instead of in the default properties.

Now my Storm rings out of the holster, and vibrates when into it, and dosen't have a chance to get to the ring before my line drops to voice mail.

I tried setting "Sound in Holster" and "Vibrate" in the default settings, and noticed it didn't change anything... Then when I tried setting them in the custom profile, Bingo! :D

Hope this helps

How did you set the "Sound in holster" option for emails? That isn't an option that I see in the custom profiles. In fact, I don't see a way to set the "Sound in holster" option for *any* of the notifications. This is a core part of the problem with notifications as RIM has (for whatever stupid reason) seen fit to remove the level of granularity of control that a user always had in the past for notification profiles. Everything now is based on the Normal profile (including custom ones).

Also - are you using custom tones / notifications for ANYTHING? THAT'S when the problems arise for me.
