I responded to your other post about IM's but I believe that I may have misunderstood. Are looking to compose PIN messages or are you looking to use an IM client (Yahoo messenger, AOL messenger and the like)???
For PIN messages, you will need the PIN number of the person you are sending the message to. It is not vendor restricted. Any BB can PIN message any other BB. There is a way to PIN message without the icon on your home screen. Select your "Messages" folder/Options/Compose PIN.
Did you recently change your theme? Try setting the device back to the default theme and see if your Blackberry Messenger icon returns
