How do I select various messages in order to mark them as read? or delete them all together?

Hold the shift key and scroll.

Or highlight a date, press the menu key, and select mark prior opened or delete prior.

Ahh, you have the storm, you should update your profile to prevent confusion.

Touch the first email you want to delete (touch not click so it is highlighted) keep your finger on that email touch down to the other email you want to delete. This should highlight every email in between and you should be able to delete them.

What about deleting every other msg or ones that are not in order? do they have to be done individually?

For deleting every other email, I have not found a way of deleting every other email that are not one right after the other, if you find a way post back because I am curious.

For the first time I feel the future might hold something different for me. It's possible I'm fooling myself but I'm willing to take the risk.
