Red face A few quick Newbie questions - First Blackberry EVER!

Please Login to Remove!

Hello all. New here. My first Blackberry is the Storm 2 (BB9550S2) and I have been using it since I got it this afternoon and reading this forum for hours. Pretty much all day. I've learned a lot, but need some quick basic help because the FAq's seem outdated and do not include the Storm line.

Ringtones: I've plenty of MP3's downloaded from Zedge (awesome site) but if I understand this, I need to convert them to another format for the Storm2 to use, yes?

Reading various posts I see (cannot post links yet) s4bb.com has a Blackberry Ringtone Generator for $14.99. Recommended?

Are there any free options out there?

Wallpaper: The screen resolution is 480x360? I've a number of original art pieces done for a comic book I am writing and would love to make some wallpaper. What specs should I stick too as far as file size, format (jpeg, tiff, bitmap, etc)?

Themes scare me. I read constant complaints about them slowing the phone down, crashing, etc, so I think I will stay away from that for a while. I need to get my feet wet first.

Thanks for the help here. I really have read a LOT of info this week. My eyes are actually hurting like mad from so much screen viewing, so I think I'll sign off for now.

1. MP3s will work fine on any of the newer BlackBerrys, including the Storm2
There are several free ringtone converters/generators.
One good free online version is Cellsea
Free Online Ringtone Maker

2. Correct size. JPGs are fine, work well. Any resolution higher than about 96dpi is lost. 72dpi is best.

3. I'd recommend sticking with the Stock themes for now, although I have found a GREAT OS5 Storm theme just recently I've been using, called Dave Pro 5.0

Thanks for that info.

Do I just hook my phone up to my PC via USB and drag and drop my ringtones? Same with Wallpapers.

This is a stupid question, but after more than an hour of lookiing, I cannot figure out how to change my wallpaper. Sorry for being such a newbie.

Yes on the ringtones, just put them on the media card in \Blackberry\ringtones or \Blackberry\music.

And to change the wallpaper, just hit the menu key while viewing a photo and select "Set As..." That'll give you the choice of setting that picture as your wallpaper or as a caller ID photo.

Is there a great place to discuss or read reviews of Apps for the Storm2? I don't see much in the way of Apps talk. My wife has an iPhone and it is loaded with apps, some free, some not. No doubt, the Net is overflowing with talk about Apps. I know Blackberry is way behind on that, but growing, so I'd like to learn what I can.

Strong learning curve with this phone compared top my old crap LG.

BlackBerry is not behind, the individuals who develop and market apps might be behind...

But to answer your question, yes, see the Aftermarket Software section of this forum

Just a note for you - This is a good forum, but check out CrackBerry.com. It is the place for BlackBerry users. A VERY active forum.

Yes, very active compared to this forum. However, with that you get a lot of threads that get off topic. Have to search through a lot more CRAP to find what you're looking for, and you have more trolls and flame wars to deal with as well.

If you want an answer quickly and the correct one at that, you've come to the right place. BBF!

There is no other BB community on the internet that compares to this one. End of story.

I am visiting both, but find this place more to the point with less off topic nonsense.

Matt,

I have dabbled extensively with themes and the worst that has happened is visual glitching. I've never heard of a theme bricking a berry.

If you purchase a theme Mobihand and BB Appworld are very safe vendors. Mobihand also gives you free backup copies and version upgrades.

Many free themes are available on Crackberry and the forums cover all issues associated with the particular theme.

Honestly, I've been far happier with the free themes rather than the few I have paid for.

But this forum has been the number one source of solving certain issues with the BB. However since the 5.0 experience I am happy to say my Storm has been running quite well. Be happy you came into the BB world around the 5.0 era. Let me tell you, I've been here since 4.7.0.67 and its been quite the uphill ride.

Welcome to the Blackberry experience brother.

It seems I am lucky to have made my upgrade after 5.0 hot. Otherwise I might be an unhappy camper.
