Default Old sms are all blank

Please Login to Remove!

I have a Storm2 9520. This thing is supposed to hold (almost) unlimited sms messages. I clear them every month or so, so this means I don't have too many. Just a few dozen. The phone has plenty free space and the sd card is the 16GB card that came with the phone and is nearly empty.

I scrolled through my sms messages looking for an old one and discovered that all messages from before the middle of this month (older then 2 weeks) are blank. The number / address book contact they come from is visible but there is no preview in the list and when opening the message it is blank. I know there was something there before as none of my friends send me blank messages.

This includes sent messages and received.

There are no options that allow me to do anything about it and I can't find anything relating to this on the web.

Anyone know why this is happening? there's no use storing an unlimited amount of messages if it doesn't actually store the body of the message.

heeeeeelllppppp

As sms messages are stored in the app memory it won't store unlimited amounts.
When you get low of file free memory it will start deleting items.

However, I haven't heard of messages existing with no text.

understandable, but text messages use very little space so the space I have available (100.7MB) should allow for a few thousand messages. I have 48 and the oldest 9 are blank.

App memory 100.7MB
Device memory 1.8GB
Media Card 14.8GB

Rather annoying. This is a new development as before I learned to delete messages in bulk I had to manually go through each message and delete. Back them I had a few hundred and they were quite old and had all their text in them.

Any idea if it's possible to get them to store on the memory card? or where in the app memory so they can be copied out?

You cant store them to media card, app memory is inaccesible.
Only way would be a backup to ipd file, and convert to read using abc amber converter.

Have you done a battery pull? Though Im doubtful it will bring back the text in those messages, you never know.

Wirelessly posted (White and Nerdy)

They cannot be stored on the card... I'm not sure on the app memory location either...

And like midnight said, I've never heard of the text with no message either

no, pulling the battery didn't work. Seems those blank messages are now gone.

Is there no setting anywhere that automatically deletes messages older then a specified age? I tried looking for something like that incase it's turned on but can't find anything.

There is (though it never seemed to work for me, on any phone *shrug*).
Options - SMS
I believe its under that.

Sadly no. I can only set validity period for sent messages and the usual delivery reporting etc.

Hopefully it's just a random glitch and things will return to normal unless anyone else can come up with any ideas to try

As yet I hven't found a difinitive answer to my query either. However my messages do seem to be staying now. But this is after I changed a whole lote of settings.

This is what I did step by step...
1> Ran desktop manager and connected my blackberry to do a full system update.
2> While in an individual SMS. Press your bb button and go to options. Set validity to max.
3> Go into your SMS folder so it shows your list of existing SMS. Press bb, options, general options. Right at the bottom is an option "Days to keep messages" set to forever. (This was previously set for me when mine were disappearing so not sure what it does.
4> Go back to your home screen and choose your Options icon.
5> Scroll down and select SMS. Look for "Validity Period", set to max.
6> Scroll down more and look for "Leave message on sim card", set this to no. (your sim card fills up and can only keep limited messages.
7> Pull the battery out the phone and leave it out a while (go have a cup of coffee). Then re-insert the battery, wait forever for the phone to boot up and then wait a few days to see if your messages stay or go.

Hope this helps, so far this is working for me...
