Default Switching from PoP to IMAP questions - 11-02-2009, 11:02 AM

I've been using Thunderbird and POP on my PC for years but since getting the BB have been trying to convert over to IMAP to help sync and be able to see all of my emails (incoming and outgoing) on my PC, my BB and even on webmail at all times and I have some questions that may help me configure my setup to work the best for me.

First off...I'm currently using google's app and a gmail address with IMAP checked. If I leave the messages in my message folder on my BB instead of deleting them regularly...do they use up memory on the phone?

I guess I'm having a hard time understanding where the messages are actually stored when using IMAP? I would like to be able to access emails sent from my PC with my BB at a later date...but am concerned if I leave all of those messages on my BB as they come in, I'll run in to memory issues on the phone.

Thanks in advance for any help tips or tricks for those of us switching from PoP to IMAP while incorporating a BB in to the mix as well.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of...

So what is the best way to use my BB to access emails that were sent out to other recipients from my PC?

Please tell me that using a browser to get in to webmail on gmail isn't the only option.

I thought that was the whole purpose of using IMAP...so that you could access any of your emails, sent or received, from any client?

And let me add to that... Considering that this is a gmail email account (s) would I be better served setting it up using PoP or IMAP using the BB app or using the Gmail App?

Does one offer more or better functionality over the other that would let me see ALL of my emails without using up all of the memory on my phone?

I guess it depends on how you use your BB. As a quick "glances" of your gmail account with simple reply or monitoring, and using your gmail interface on the computer for real communications. I use POP against my Gmail and there are messages I would want to read later, i delete from my bb and leave it on gmail for later reading/responding. I can always respond from my bb if its short and something that need immediate attention.

with IMAP its probably more proper if you require exact replica of what you see on your gmail as on your bb at all times. You require that both mailboxes be identical, and use either interface equally.

I am happy with POP against GMail -- i see all my mesages, and decide to deal with them now nor later, knowing that I still ahve a copy on gmail for archiving or for later use.

Main problem with PoP is if I want to see an email I've sent out from my PC...on my BB, I can't.

Yes thats true, but again, PoP and IMAP fits different people different ways. If I need to get more involved with my gmail, which is not often, I simply go to the Gmail app on my BB which shows an exact replica of my gmail account.

I remember putting the Gmail app on my BB when I first set my email accounts up. I've taken the email accounts off and set up a new gmail account on the BB since then...I"m assuming the Gmail app is working in conjunction with that email account now.

For instance, on my email account icon, a LOT of the emails from that new Gmail account are in that folder, and I can't seem to delete them from the BB.

But even so, the emails sent from my webmail Gmail account, do not show up in that folder for some reason.

How do I know for sure if the Gmail App is working correctly for the one Gmail account I have set up on my BB?

I redownloaded and installed the gmail app and that is PERFECT!!! That'll work for me exactly as I need it to.

Now I can go back to pop on everything, leave it all as I normally did and just use the gmail app if I need to get to any messages sent from my PC.

Thanks...
