a key (B, M, etc) will lauch the BlackBerry shortcut. Pressing
a key (B, M, etc) will launch the speed dial shortcut for any assigned numbers (or prompt to add a new entry, if unassigned). Dialing from home screen
allows you to manually dial a phone number by recognizing the key presses similar to the way a touchtone land line phone works.
The difference between the first two options (tapping and pressing a key) is how long you hold the key. Dialing from home screen is, indeed, a setting managed via the OPTIONS area. (Green 'call' button, options, general options, dial from home screen = YES/NO). If you press and hold 'K', it should have no effect on the dial from home screen setting because the 'K' key is not shared with a numeric key... where as 'D' (8) would...
