Default Wifi surfing on 9700, no data plan?

Please Login to Remove!

I have a 9700 on T-Mobile, without a data plan. I am able to access the net, but only limited sites, via wifi at my house. I am connected to my wifi network with no problems. But I keep getting the upsell 'subscription required' message when I try to connect to facebook, etc.
I can get espn, and other sites, but not FB. Why can I access ESPN, but not others? Thanks, CH

I also have a 9700 on Tmo with no data plan, but have no problem at all running around the internet via my home wi-fi. When I first got the device, I was having similar problems to what you describe but for some reason they have stopped, and I am not exactly sure why. Here are changes I made that may (or may not) have done the trick: 1. I use Opera mini 5 browser instead of the T-Mo or Blackberry browser, and 2. I've upgraded my OS to a version not originating at the T-Mobile site. My fix for the problem at the time it was occurring was to turn off the mobile network and/or use wi-fi on the device without the SIM installed. Hope these thoughts help!

There are somethings you just can't do without the Blackberry Data Plan.

Correct . . . You cannot use email push, however the entire internet, including BlackBerry specific applications like Ap World and BBM, all the social websites like FB, YouTube etc., are available through any (unsecure) wi-fi connection. I can Google, Yahoo, Check email anywhere, download and install aps and themes ota, etc. The only restriction is that I cannot use the actual T-Mobile network to do it, I have to wi-fi through my home router or a public wi-fi network. And with the proliferation of wi-fi networks everywhere, the internet without a data plan is easy.

Also, a side note, MMS has been available on all Blackberry devices that run os 4.5 and newer without a data plan. I've used it on an 8700g and an 8100 Pearl and my kid currently uses MMS on his 8100, and we have no data plan . . .

I wonder if this is true for all carriers.

That's kinda my point. I'm guessing the FAQ was written as a general guideline. It would be administratively prohibitive to update the FAQ for ever carrier and what they provide, with and without a data plan. I have read in other forums that some carriers require a data plan even to use wifi for MMS and other BB related apps. And I believe the FAQ even states this.

Hi guys,

I'm actually quite new to bb, so pardon the noobness of my questions:

1) If without the data plans, can i still use bb apps? Can wifi be in place to use bb apps?

2) Am using bold 9700, if i subscribe to data plans for about 2 months, download whatever possible apps. but am deciding to cancel the data bundle plan, can i still use the apps?

1) Which BB apps? BBM, push email, BB browser = no. All BB apps require a blackberry data plan.

2) Depends on the app. downloading Facebook and cancelling the data plan will result in not being able to use the app. This is true of most if not all of the apps.

What about bb apps like fb, bibles, games, maps and all that.

Btw, how do 1 gauge the data cap of those apps/bbm. I am given 1GB max but i have no idea what 1GB consist of.

FB, no. It requires a blackberry data plan. Map applications use data to download the maps, BBMaps and I believe Google maps, require a blackberry data plan.
Games are just games, no data required; however you won't be able to download directly onto the phone, as it requires the blackberry browser to do so; that won't work without a blackberry data plan.

BBM won't work without a blackberry data plan, so how much data it uses, doesn't apply in your case.
1GB is alot, blackberry's compress data more than any other phone, so you shouldn't be able to use 1GB in a month.
