when the desktop manager is open on your pc connect the 9700 with the usb cable that came with the phone .look in the bottom left hand corner of the manager it should read device connected (PIN):blackberry 9700 with your pin number.every phone has a unique pin number.if you see this that means your computer is 'seeing' or recognizing that your bb 9700 is attached then the desktop manager will let you continue .if it does not say the word connected ie disconnected there may be a problem with the usb cable or your usb port on your pc.it sounds like the pc is not 'seeing' the phone.

Sometimes plugging it into a different port helps. Or when all else fails, reboot!
