When I click on calendar the default view is today I thought the shortcut for
week view was w and the shortcut key for month m
however all this does is seem to start a new appointment
what am I doing wrong?

You are right...w=week/a=agenda/m=month/t=today...etc...However - the shortcuts don't work when initial view is set to "day". I set the "initial view" option to "Agenda", which does allow the shortcuts to function as you'd like them to.

For what it's worth, if you disable quick entry in calendar options, the keypad shortcuts will work on the Day screen.
