Not able to add or edit contacts with a BB9700.
When you try to edit, the phone will lock up.

Looks like its the device software issue. Can you wipe it and re-install it and you should be ok. PS: back up first before you wipe out the device. A MUST. You dont need to take backup of SD card because that is not external. Also make sure the SD is not encrypted

We did that, and it worked for a couple of days and went right back to doing the same thing.

Strange indeed. Can you list a detailed step by step process you follow that leads to this problem in case we're missing something here... Are you sure you're not touching the lock button on the top-left or indeed one of the hot keys on both sides of the phone (if you have programmed these to lock your phone)?

I noticed that it happened after I tried to download and install Yahoo Messenger. I have been saving my new contacts as SMSes. I tried to delete the YM software but the delete button is somehow locked. Really appreciate your help

You save new contacts as "SMSes" and your delete button is locked? I can't make any sense out of your questions...
