I downloaded an app for facebook chat, when I finished downloading it I had to accept some terms of agreements, one of the terms was that the app could access my information when I wasn't on. I'm slightly concerned about this now, however it could be irrational paranoia. Should I be concerned about my personal info?

You should always be concerned about your personal info. With that said, only you can decide if this app (whichever one you are talking about) fits within your comfort zone.

The only way a Chat application is going to work is if you give it access to your FB profile. you just have to trust the developer.

I've developed FB applications, and depending on what the developer is asking for, they can view / do every/any thing.

I feel ok since
all apps that go on the appw world have to go through RIM don't they? Isn't it secure? The app is "free facebook chat app" by Solverlabs. I've heard good things about them too. I just feel a little uncomfortable.

RIM will never be able to identify every application that presents a security risk. It's still up to the end user to screen what applications get installed.

I would not take it for granted that an app is 'safe' no matter where I obtained it, from app world or anywhere.

To add to what the others said above:

Ask yourself if the permissions make sense for what the app does. If you don't understand, contact the developer and ask.

Look at the developer. Don't blindly download apps. Do an internet search on the app and the developer.

Read the reviews on app world and whatever you find in your search.

You can try not allowing certain permissions and see what happens. The app probably will not function, but you can try.

Finally, if you have doubts, don't download.
