| They aren't "data" connection arrows, they are "active" connection arrows.
You also see them (well i did because i have a habit of picking my phone up right before a message comes through) when you receive a text, or make or receive a phone call.
Its basically telling you "you are receiving/sending something". Be that data, sms or voice.
