Default Defective 9800 Or incapatible?

Please Login to Remove!

hello all, I just upgraded to the Torch from a Pear Flip 8230 (big mistake that phone was) and well I am experiencing one big issue. I frist must say I am will bell mobility here in Canada. Secondly my phone is a non branded blackberry (not a ATT import) My phone seems to have poor 3G signal coverage. My phone at the best of times may have 2 - 3 bars or else its in SOS mode (more so in this mode then in 3G mode) I know with my old phone I would have G3 coverage but the phone would also change to 1X at times.

So my question(s) is it the phone itself or Bell? Do I need a software upgrade from bell? Is there a modification that can be done to the software to enable a lower-end signal coverage than the 3G?

Side note, I have a freidn who just got a Samsung Android phone with bell and he says he phone will flip between 3G and H (whatever that mode is) so was curious is there was a way to enable this coverage in the phone...

Thanks, hope this makes sense...

Could be the OS, but most likely it is the bell signal and coverage area. Keep in mind that the 9800 is GSM and the 8230 was CDMA. Bell was a CDMA carrier and they probably have a better network in place than that for GSM right now.

Is your friend standing beside you when he has a 3G/H signal? that is the only way to compare it.

WHat OS are you running now? The latest is in the yellow sticky at the top of the 9800 section.

H is HSPA (or HSDPA, HSPA+) and is effectively 3.5G

I am on 6.0 Bundle 278 (V6.0.0.141)

My friend actually lives further away from the bell tower than I am and he says he has limited 3G coverage but the phone goes into H mode (whichever that is) My phone doesnt even show H just 3G and SOS. h was also at a location today where i was yesterday and he sad he had H coverage and I was on SOS

Can I upgrade my software and not have it effect the system lock? Which one should i flash with the Rogers or AT&T? I noticed them there but didnt want to do anything to my phone to mess it up....

refresh and see my answer regarding H.
And yes, updating the OS won't lock the phone to a network.

Are you in a good coverage area? Might be worth a call to Bell to see what's up.

I am in a "white hole" as described by ATT. Get a weak signal within 50 feet of the house - 0 to 2 bars at best. But they did tell me that one of their 3G towers was having problems.

Hmm i may have to call them and see. Meaning i will be SOL with bell cause they probably wont do a damn thing haha.... There is only 1 bell tower and 1 rogers tower where i live... I at least get Edge signal when I tested with a Rogers sim card...

Ao I just had my friend come in with his samsung galaxy vibrant to compare signals, side by side his phone (which is a bell released phone) was getting full 3g and H signal (was bouncing back between the two). And my phone 2 bars on 3g. So now I wonder if its my phone and something to do with bell, would bell alter the hardware any for their network compatibility? I live outside of a city and notice that when driving my signal will bounce around from full bars to no bars. However in the city I have perfect signal.

Well I called bell, they got me a new sim card and then in the end of it all just gave me a line of saying the phone wasnt compatible with the bell network.... However I think its something to do with their tower out here not providing the same signal strength as it does in town or not all the same frequencies as in town. The woman on the phone couldnt explain it to me and just said i must have a phone not compatible with bell, as there is nothing wrong with the tower servicing my area.... some BS there i believe.... As the phone works perfectly 5k down the road....
