Default Need keyboard comparison 9700 vs 9800

Please Login to Remove!

Many of you converted from 9700's... how would you compare the Torch keyboard? I hear it's more compact, and I already have issues with my 9700's kybd. Assuming the Torch's is smaller (narrower), how is the onscreen kybd? Anyone have experience with the iPhone vs Torch onscreen kybd?

FYI I also have a 3GS and am pretty happy with it's keyboard, I don;t have issues with the lack of tactile feedback.

I just haven't had a chance to actually try a Torch... Rogers only has dummy phones and 3-week backorders for real ones, which is pretty useless.

Thanks

I find the keyboard of 9700 easier to use then Torch's. Keyboard on Torch is definitely more compact when compared to 9700. Having said that, I REALLY did not like the 9700 keyboard when I upgraded from 8310.

I can't compare with iPhone, but CAN compare Torch's virtual keyboard to that of iPod Touch - I think Torch has a better virtual keyboard, even in portrait orientation I have had no problem using Torch, iPod Touch was less "accommodating" to me. Torch has no tactile feedback.

My wife's main complaint about the Torch is that the calls frequently go into the mute mode ("cheek dialing"), and I tried to explain how the proximity sensor works and what it does, but... She still complains...

All in all, I think Torch is a great phone, but like any piece of equipment will take time to get fully accustomed to.

While a bit more compact, the keys have less play and clackiness than my 9700 or 9000 or 8310. There is so much more to the Torch that just its keyboard. Even with the 9780, you lose screen real estate and the touchscreen. Once you go Torch, you can never go back.

I had a 9700 and like the keyboard better on the Torch. it takes less effort and the keys feel better. I was always using my nails to type on the 9700. the Torch is better with using the thumb pad.

The screen is nice and touch typing is good on it. i have heard from many storm users that they like the torch better.

Well I read this thread with amazement. 2003 my first BB (7290 I think). Vodafone dragged me away from the Bold 2 kicking ans screaming: iPhone4; Android now Torch in 14 days (still waiting for DHL to collect the HTC Desire Z) and I am stunned by how good the Torch is and the keyboard is better then BB bold 2!

I finally had some time to play with my brother's Torch and I have to agree the kybd IMO seems significantly better than my 9700. Not sure exactly what does it for me, but I prefer it by a wide margin. Didn't spend any time on the virtual version though...

The Torch is slightly more cramped than the 9700 but I think it's something you get used to in time - whereas funnily enough and this really surprised me I find the touchscreen easier and makes less mistakes than iPhone4, I find myself using the touchscreen more than the physical keyboard on the Torch so there you go

Well I have had my Torch for two days upgrading from my 9700. Already I think its brilliant. I find the fact that the keyboard is "lower" if you know what I mean as its down in the slide actually much easier to use.

I still haven't noticed any real difference in keyboards as long as they are in this shape. (88xx, 9000, 96xx, 97xx) they never take me more than ten minutes to get used to.

Just moved from a 9700 to a 9800 - when I moved from an 83xx to a 9700 the keyboard took quite a while to get used to - from the 9700 to 9800 it was odd at first (I've had the Torch less than a week) but I like it better. With the 9700 I had to type with my nails whereas with the 9800 if can type with nails or finger tips - at first , it was odd because the keyboard is so thin - but I quickly adapted to it.

I find myself using the onscreen keyboard at times also and it work as well. I'm still using the slide out on longer emails.

I LOVE the larger screen and browser of the 9800 and I love how they made it more intuitive (like clicking on the profile icon to change profiles).

Good luck.

Effort = Reward. The more practice and effort with the Torch the more proficient you will get with the Torch kyeboard.

its not as clacky as the 9700 but it get the job done, definitly better than the original curve where you had to really press down the key. One thing for sure, since am a french speaking canadian who switch from french to english all the time (including 3 times in the same sentence...), i hate the corrective/predictive option and keep it on direct

I have been using the Torch for two weeks now, it's nice but can't say the keyboard is any improvement over the Bold I just gave up. I do mostly email and texting on my phone, I have big thumbs and still find the Curve to have the best keyboard for me. Can't hit individual keys on the virtual boards at all and never liked predictive text. Find the raised and spaced keys on the Curve much easier to type with, now that Curve has track pad and 3G I think I'm ready to go back to it.

I have selected the reduced keyboard in portrait mode and like the fact that I can switch back and forth. I could always type pretty fast in suretype on my old Pearl and like having that option now.

The flatter keys not only make room for the slider. They allow me to go even faster than the 9700 keyboard. The Torch keyboard is one very minor factor to consider when testing the Torch to see if it meets your needs and should disqualify it from consideration because it is different and requires effort to become accustomed to.

Because of the edges on the left and right, it is difficult to hold the alt key and type numericals. especially typing the number 7... A little uncomfortable for numerical passwords typing...

i find the opposite to be true for me. That being said, i barely notice any functional difference between the two and both are certainly better than any touchscreen keypad.
