Default Coincidence? Or is 9800 prone to wrecking SD cards?

Please Login to Remove!

I recently transferred my 2GB micro SD card from a trial 9800 back to my Bold 9000, and now find it is corrupt and it wants to reformat it. I assume this happened because both phones were on when I transferred it, and that one of them tried to write to it when it wasn't fully in.

Are you supposed to turn the phone off when you do this? I never have before, and I move these cards between phones regularly. Never had a problem since I first got an 8800 4 years ago.

Or is the 9800, or perhaps OS6, prone to doing this? Has anyone else had a card wrecked lately?

BTW, I reformatted it after recovering some stuff off it, and a day later it has corrupted itself again, this time without being taken out of the Bold again. Has anyone seen that before? Is it time to get rid of this card?

I've always turned the device off (removed battery) when inserting or removing the card. But I note on my 9700 there is a menu item, "Remove Media Card", in options > memory, so I suppose a hot removal is possible, but with use of that remove card feature. Still, I would recommend removing the battery when doing so.

I have been using BB devices for several years now, and only since I have the Torch that I have had problems with my memory cards.

I have had 4 situations so far where my cards required to be reformatted. It happened with two different devices, and three different cards (1 gb; 2 gb and 4 gb).

Last incident was yesterday, where after an upgrade, my card required reformatting... and of course I had many files that only existed on my card...

That's interesting. Others have had no problems, so I suppose it could just be coincidence that two of us suddenly have problems now, but I think I will warn my users to be more cautious if we get this phone. I've never even looked at Options/memory, but I think I'll advise using the "Remove media card" option there if I don't want to pull the battery.

I often change cards over for users, so I know who'll be doing the file recovery if I corrupt one.

I wonder if there's some background process in OS6 occasionally writing to the card, increasing the chance of corruption as it's removed.

As for the backups someone mentioned, yes, good idea, but who downloads photos every day? I didn't lose much myself, especially considering that most of the shots were old ones from the Bold and of horrendous quality.

This may be neither here nor there, but when I recently installed a new card. I wanted to format it in the BlackBerry before moving my files to it, and I got a reading (or accessing) card error. So I ran repair, and got the error again, but then the repair still ran and I got the success message when it was done. So I ran format and left it after the error, and the format ran. Card was really ok, and BlackBerry had no other problems reading it and writing to it, so I move on. Anyway, I had occaision to reinstall the OS when I upgraded to OS 6 and then downgraded (hours later) back to OS 5. For giggles I tried the repair again. Did it a few times. This time no card error message. Take it for what it's worth.
