Question Deactivate Touchscren how ?

Please Login to Remove!

The device is very nice, but, using the trackpad I frequently touch the screen, and most times something awful happens (the phone calls someone i do not intended to call, or something opens i dont want to open) because I accidentally touch the screen when I use the trackpad.

I dont need a touchscreen, just a nice, modern and fast phone, which the 9900 is.

I there a setting to disable the touchscreen function ?

I already thought that, but now I have confirmation - thanks.

(should be a simple thing to integrate a user customizable setting into the OS for rim, I wonder why they did not think of this, you can lock the keyboard so, why no the trackpad)

Trackpad or touch screen, the answer is the same. Cannot be done. If you do not want a phone with a touch screen, then perhaps it would be best to choose another model or manufacturer?

No,
I have a blackberry, and, unless they completeley remove the keyboard, I stay with it.

But the touchscreen is something which is only useful occasionally, most times annoying.
Especially when u use the device with one hand to do something.

But, i can still go back to the 9700 if it turns out the 9900 is of no use to me.
No problem.

Just takes some seat time to get things working smoothly...

of course this is a point.

My common problems are that I operate the phone using one hand, and, to do this, the only place i can use to hold it using my thumb is below the keyboard.
But then, the weight is enormous. Not a safe way to hold it.
With the 9700 I was able to hold it on the screen, jsut above the trackpad - perfect balance, because this is just the middle of the phone.

All other places are occupied either with keys or the f*****ng touch screen.
I could hold it on the speaker, but then it is hard to type on the keyboard because while I move the thumb in the direction of the keyboard I will touch the screen.

looks like I have to learn how to hold the thing on the keyboard trying not to press a key.

I'm not sure I see the real issue here... I hold my 9930 in one hand and type on it at the same time, all without hitting the touch screen unless I want to. It's not rocket science. Fingers behind the device spread from top to bottom. Thumb resting on keyboard. Gravity does its magic and the device stays put, even when I type on it.

You are right, while typing, this all works ok.

But some things I do nearly blind:
pull the thing out of the pocket, deactivate lock, type in password for unlock.
and sometimes I might have to do other things, still having the (now unlocked) BB in my hand.
Or, I might try lookup some things during a call.
Or pickup a call while driving, using the built in speaker. This also has to be done blind.

If I dont look at the display and my fingers, I can be sure I touch the screen on a random position.

I know 2 other guys who have the same problems, one is still trying, the other refused to use the 9900 after one day.

Perhaps, if the 99xx is too difficult, you should use the 9780.

The 9780 would be ok, but then I could also go back to the 9700 which I still have.
However the 97xx has none of the nice toys of the 9900 I desire.

Meanwhile I tried a hardware modification:
Why not just disconnect the cable to the touchscreen ?
But, the cable is tied together with the cable of the screen as it seems.
The only way would be to cut through the flex-Cable which goes to the touchscreen.
A new touchscreen is about $50 if I ever want to have touch again.

So I rather wait a little and try to accustom to the 9900, before reverting to the 9700

But if anyone is able to build an application to deactivate the touchscreen via Software I give $50.

Maybe, if more people have the same problem, the total sum of money will go to a level where this is of interest ?

Well, good luck. I still see this as making a mountain out of a molehill, not a "problem" that needs to be fixed. The 99xx is a touchscreen device. Stick with a non-touchscreen device or change the way you interact with the 99xx. Simple as that.

I use my 9900 one-handed. Seems to fit perfectly, and didn't really understand what the problem was. Haha Until I realized I have an OtterBox defender on my phone. Fits perfectly and have not had any run-ins with accidentally hitting buttons and/or touchscreen. I don't know about an app to disable the screen, you can alsways try getting a case and see if your one handed technique works.

Well, This is a problem of me, and my expectations I have of a new BB. Until now all my hopes were fullfilled with every new generation of BB:
I got the same functionality as before +new things.
This time, I get more functionality but things I have learned do not work any more.

Maybe I am wrong in the assumption that the 9900 is a 9000 + new features. It rather is a completely new thing.

But from the first view it is a handheld which is the size and the appearence of a 9000 but, with touchscreen.

So even it might be boring to hear it again, why did RIM did not add an option to disable/enable the touchscreen with either an extra button or a key combination ? This is cheaper then producing two different devices and would have been easy to implement.
(uhh nobody from RIM is listening, I know that).

A device which forces you to use the touchscreen instead of giving you the option to use it will only reduce the customer base instead of attracting a broader range of customers.

But I will try out the suggestion of ZombieBerry, and if that helps - great.

I use this thing heavily and to date, find no issues whatsoever with the touchscreen. Do I make the odd mistake here and there? Yes, but it's rare. Would not give up the 9900 for anything!

I finally gave up with this 9900.

I might have tried a little harder, but since the battery runtime was best case 12hrs, the device is simply unusable for me.
With the same daily use, the 9700 had 2 days when the battery was new, and now, about 24hrs. This is ok. but 10 to 12 hrs, this is not even a full day of work.

Even with better firmware, I dont think that more then 14 hours are possible.
So, goodbye to this Model. I wait for the next one.

I'll admit that when I first bought this phone (9900) the battery life was pretty disappointing. After careful management (which I also used on my last berry, 9780) I have seen a significant improvement. Obviously things like coverage will impact the way your phone uses it's power supply. Apps that are constantly pulling in info etc. Many threads on 9900/30 power consumption on the interwebz!
