Default 9900 firmware upgrade without BES activation

Please Login to Remove!

I used to use BlackBerry 8310 and left for iPhone, then work was giving me a 9300, I refused to use it.

Now they give me a new 9900 as an exception, it's good to be back. Work uses Microsoft BPOS with BES, just wonder if I can download the latest firmware or beta firmware without BES activation? Really want to try out the 7.1

You need to chat with the BES Admin and/or IT staff before you do it. Make sure they are OK with it and can support the device once updated.

This is especially important if they are providing the device and paying all the bills. In some firms going outside of their guidelines is grounds for termination.

Dubdub is correct. I sometimes question whether some IT departments can support the device even BEFORE the device is updated. However, that being said, I believe you can do this. If you simply upgrade it will activate automatically. However, if you make a backup then wipe the device, then do the upgrade I think it will skip the automatic BES activation. Then when you're ready you can get an activation password from your IT department.

Some IT departments don't care (like mine) but others do care so be careful. Good luck!

As long as your computer is not connected to your corporate network when you perform the upgrade, it will not automatically go back on the BES. Usually I'm doing it from home, so I have to open a VPN connection, open DM, and then connect my BB to get it to activate again.

That's how it used to be. It may also depend on the version of BES but BES 4.1.3 and higher will automatically activate on OS 4.5 and higher even without a vpn connection to your mail server. I've done it many, many times using Loader.exe.

Really? I have not been able to do that. I either have to plug into the DM or wireless activate...and we're on BESX. Before that, we were on BES 5.x and we couldn't do that either unless on the DM (which has to have the exchange client on the same machine), or though an OTA.

That's the way I used to do it. Now whenever I do an upgrade, activation kicks off automatically even if I just use loader.exe. Been doing that for several years now. We're still on BES 413. It won't work if I wipe the device first unless I use DM connected to my mail server.

Ahhh...that's the difference. I always wipe it 1st...but yes, if I don't wipe, it will auto reactivate with loader. Sorry about that...
