Default BIS OWA Information

My BIS access was disrupted recently due to a new implementation of Outlook 2003 (yeah we are behind the times!). The OWA server sits behind a reverse proxy server and is inable to validate. I have worked with RIM and no love. I am arguing with the Standards and Security counsel over our implementation which has disrupted quite a few BIS users. My questions are the following:

1.) Does BIS require that POP3 be enable in any way? (Security states that BIS is dependent on POP3 which I think is false)

2.) Has anyone been able to establish BIS through a reverse proxy server?

You thoughts, humor, jabs and flames will all be greatly appreciated!
