Default Attachments displaying as 'text soup'

When we open an email attachment on one particular model 8800, we get a hash of ASCII characters. Looks like the terminal is showing them as text and not graphics.
Works for Word and Acrobat files. Haven't tried others yet.

Any clues?

Does the device have Blackberry Attachment Services running? Check Settings-->Options-->Advanced-->Applications.
