I have 8830 G updated with the latest software from Verizon on 10/21/07.

I have the latest Desktop Manager updated with the latest version 10/21/07.

But when I go to configure Sybchronization the "Configure how messages are to be reconciled with your desktop" is grayed out and I can not select it.

How do I get this selected? I do not use the Blackberry Exchange Services.

If you are BIS, (not BES), you cannot synchronize messages either via the Desktop Manager or wirelessly.

The only BIS sync of messages occures on Gmail and Yahoo, of read/unread messages. There is some limited delete message capability from the BB to your email server.
