New to BB, I purchased a Verizon 8830 last week, running 4.2.2.148. I opened the native BB browser to go to a "my yahoo" page, and received the following message: "Your browser is not officially supported - we recommend that you download a supported browser".
I have been following this forum for several weeks now, in anticipation of getting the BB 8830, and I have read and searched the FAQ's...but can not find the info/solution I need. Is my experience with "My Yahoo" why people have replaced the BB native browser with "Opera"? Why "Opera" instead of "Windows Internet Explorer"? Is there any downside to replacing the original BB browser program?
Lastly, if the general recommendation is "Opera"...could you please provide complete instructions on how to install the "Opera" application?
akosnitzky, thanks very much for the reply. I really am new to this, so pelase bear with me. When you say Opera's features prevent it from using it as your default, how is Opera utilized then? Are people experiencing the same, or similar problems as i did with the native BB browser? If so, what are my options to optimize the BB internet experience? Thanks again in advance!
There are some pages that the BB browser just won't open. Opera Mini is a 3rd party browser that you install and run instead of the BB Browser. When he says it won't be the default browser he means that if you click a link in an email it won't automatically bring up Opera. You open Opera when you want to go to the web. It's a nice browser.
1) Is there any negative or "downside" (to the BB OS or user experience) when installing an application such as this?
2) If the recommendation is to utilize Opera...would you please provide instructions on how to install the (Opera) application? I assume I have to go to the Opera website first, and download the application to my PC...what do I do next? Any additional tips, pointers, etc on loading applications would be very much appreciated!
Thanks Perfect...the Opera site indicates that the install options are to download directly into the phone, or start with the PC. I see in the BB desktop software folder there is an "application" option. Is it preferable to download to PC and use the BB software, or doesn't it make any difference? Thanks in advance!
Hi MadDog, thanks for the reply! How did you download/install the application... directly from the website to the handset, or to your PC and then through BB Desktop Manager? Also, (help me visualize this) since it appears we cannot make it the default browser, I guess you launch the application from the main menu screen, by rolling the trackball over it?

Well, I donwloaded the Opera"mini" browser directly into my phone. The installation worked beautifully. However, I tried to go to "MyYahoo", and the site still said my browser was not supported! I assumed that Opera would have no difficulty, just about anywhere.
Is there a version of Microsoft's browser that is compatible on the BB, and that the BB community would recommend? What browser software are other BB users recommending? Thanks very much in advance for any feedback.
