BIS is part of your BB data plan with any carrier. No extra charge. You will get instant email using Yahoo and Gmail in the BIS.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8700/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Careful with that!
They are about to start auditing accts. And make sure the device and media plan match. If you had an appropriat plan for your treo it will need to be switched the a BB plan should be same cost.

Which "media" plan do you have

AFAIK, a medianet plan is very limited in what you can do with the BB. To get email and Internet, you really need the BB dataplan. That will give you BIS access to you to 10 email accounts. Otherwise you will have very limited Internet connectivity and no push email.

The personal BB Internet plan is $34.99 or $29.99 if you have a qualifying voice plan (450 minutes I think). Its really worth the extra $10.

Yeah, I went in to the unlimited BB media plan with the promise that I could change my data plan if I wasn't happy with it. It's not even been a week and I am so glad I went with that option. Definitely worth the money, IMO.

I really can't see getting a BB without the BB dataplan. You can't "enjoy" all the benefits without it.

I knew I would have to have a plan for this device specifically, but I didn't know if I would use it enough to justify the cost of an unlimited data plan. And by 'justify' I mean talking my wife in to it.

Paying for x amount of data seems ancient to me. It reminds of the pay per minute feature the old compuserve/aol used to have.

I'm using the MediaMax plan $19.99 (AT&T) with my BB.

Besides, not getting push emails, I don't feel like I am limited at all. I have unlimited internet access - I can retieve my email from the browser. My GPS works flawlessly (running Google Maps, Nav4All or AmAze depending on my needs). I can run many other 3rd party apps.

Is there something else I'm missing (besides push email) by not spending an extra $10-20 more per month for BIS?

I have the BIS from Sprint and I LOVE not having to go to the browser to get any email account I have on the net. That's hugely worth it in my humble opinion.

If its not a business device to you and you dont need instant access then no you arent missing anything.

You cant do over the air downloads or anything with the BB browser would be about it.

How much is your data bill? If you are getting OTA downloads, then you had better look at the bill and see what the data charges are. Could be a big surprise.

Welcome to the BB. I suggest you take a look at the BB FAQ. It should give you a wealth of BB info and answer many of your questions.

And to reiterate, to get the most from the BB, you need the BB data plan. Its $29.99 a month if you have a qualifying voice plan (450 minutes I think it is) and well worth it. That gives you push email to the device for up to 10 email accounts and unlimited Internet access.
