Default Pin vs BB Messenger

Could someone give a very brief explanation of the difference. do you have to use the BB address of the person with BB Messenger, or can it be their Yahoo, for example.

BBMessenger uses PIN messaging so it only works with other BB users. If their email address is affiliated with their BB then it will work, otherwise it won't. I usually only add contacts via PIN into BBMessenger as adding by email address usually causes issues.

I use both. I use BBMessenger when I want to chat with another BB user. I use a regular pin message when I just want to send just one message to another BB user.

I very rarely use PIN or BB Messenger since most people I know have phones other than BlackBerries. What issues are caused by using the email address that is associated with someone's BB rather than the PIN? I just use direct PIN messages since I recall having messages disappear from BB Messenger once...I didn't like that.
