Default BIS Versus Generic data Plan?

Please Login to Remove!

Newbie here so please be patient with my naiveness. In Canada, rogers offers both a blackberry service and mobile internet. the blackberry service is twice the price. I have a Pearl 8100 that I just want to use for some web surfing and maybe GMail or email redirection. Is it necessary for me to pay the extra for the blackberry service or will the data plan suit my needs? Also if someone could give a explanation of the difference that would be great. Thanks for such a useful site!

Rafkin... welcome to the Forums. It's a simple comparison: The BlackBerry Data Plan works with a BB, the others don't.

Read more in our FAQ section why you need it.

Good luck.

So, what I want to do I cannot do with the $5 mobile internet plan? I have to use the $25 Blackberry plan. The reason I am asking is that both myself and my wife have Pearls that means $50 over $10. Just wondering what the difference is and if I need the extra services, if they are worth the extra $40 or not.

The regular data plans are for non-BlackBerry cellphone which only gives you web browsing. You need a BlackBerry data plan in order to email and other data on the BlackBerry. From the link below you need the $45 plan at minimum.

Rogers.com-Wireless, Digital Cable, Hi-Speed Internet, Bundles

OK thank you. I think I got it now. I am going to call Rogers and see what they suggest as my cheapest route to take for 2 phones on blackberry plan. Thanks again for all the help and kind words.

Hey man,

I just wanted to get my 2 cents in. I'm up here in Canada as well, on Rogers Wireless. I'm using just a normal mobile internet plan ($5) with a new unlocked Blackberry 8800.

I have an an application on my BB called Yahoo Go! that seems to work great with the generic data plan (BB came with it) -- it downloads my Yahoo e-mail flawlessly, and allows me to send back e-mail just as well. I know you're looking for Gmail, but some other e-mails do allow you to forward the e-mail over. It so happens to work out perfectly in my case. It's definitely not BB push e-mail, but for my casual uses, it's excellent.

For web browsing, you will need that BB plan, but using Yahoo Go! myself, I can bring up the news/entertainment/local weather/etc. so I can be forwarded off to a mobile website, and use their search function to bring up webpages, but I can't simply just insert a URL into the phone. So it's definitely limited there, but for my uses, it works wonderfully.

I was planning on doing a lot of texting, and with the Blackberry's keyboard and MSN Mobile, I'm also able to text message people on my MSN list using just SMS (pretty well all phones can do this, but the BB keyboard makes it oh-so-nice).

I know I'm not meeting all your needs there, but just something if you were wondering. This link has shown me pretty well everything I had needed to know: here.

Cheers, and good luck -- let us know how it goes eh?

Well you were right JSanders...the BB plan it was. I opted for the $25 plan on one phone only for now, wife says she doesn't need it. I might try the $5 plan on her phone later.. she just wants to surf when needed but I am not sure that she has the patience (or skill!..sshhh...) to be jumping around to other search engine sites to get on another site. anyway thanks for all the replies, I am now a full blackberry user!!
