Default FTP Connection Problems In Browser

Please Login to Remove!

I have a BB 7250 with Verizon running OS 4.0. I can browse with no problems, hoever, whenever I trie to browse to my company's FTP site I get an error that I cannot log in at this time to please try later and if the problem persists to speak to Verizon. Well the problem persists, and I have spoken to Verizon, the best that they can tell me is that since I can connect anyplace else it is working. My site does not allow for anonymous log-ins, it requires an user name and a password. If that is the reason I do not know how to make that part work. Any help I can get as noob will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

umm, i don't think FTP is allowed via the browser. just HTTP and HTTPS. if its an FTP thats accessed via HTTP, then i would think the password not being allowed would be the issue. if you're typically prompted with an htaccess-type password (pop-up asking for username/password), then you can try putting in http://username:password@site.com and it may let you in (this would be a huge security risk, as your password would now be stored in your browser history).

I've been looking for a blackberry ftp client for a while now. So far it seems that we're just going to have to wait on someone to develop one. I'm looking forward to the release of such a program, and would gladly plunk down a bit of money for it.

jibi thanhs a lot for the quick response. I tried your suggestion and yes though the site is accessed via gttp, when i put the username: password@ site.com with the http:// in front it said that was an invalid url name and would not go ahead. I also tried http://ftp.site.com/username:password and that did not work. My problem is that i was trying to download images and ringtones i had placed there to download to the BB, so it is not a life or death situation. But at any rate thanks for your nice attempt.

If all you want to do is download ringtones and images then you don't need to ftp to the site. Place the files in a directory accessible via http and just go there. Say your main site is http://www.yoursite.com and you put the files in a directory off the main site called ringtones. Go to http://www.yoursite.com/ringtones/nameoftone.mid and it will download to your BB.

Thank You jwaters, I will try to see if i can do that, it is just that i figured it was easier for me to play in the ftp site that is already set up for things like that. If i am able to do that I will let you know how it went.

As long as where you put the files are accessible by http requests it will work. I'm not sure how your website is set up, in many cases the default for websites are /www/htdocs (linux servers that is). Everything under /htdocs is readable by an http request. So, ftp your file to /www/htdocs/ringtones and it should be able to be gotten to by http://yoursite.com/ringtones/nameoftone.mid.

A simplified explanation here, but it should get you on the right track.

Yes That worked then, thanks a million for helping a noob with this awesome piece of equipment. I am having a ball and I know I have only discovered the tip of the iceberg so far.
