Yeah. That was exactly what I wanted to do. Ring tones do nothing to me, and most of preinstalled stuff either wasn't my style, or was useless.

I would have removed more if those were not such an important part of OS, such as Phone application, because 1) it runs all time. 2) I will never use it at all.

Can you simply delete the .cod's using Sure Wipe on the device itself? I never us VAD and would love to remove it.... but I don't sync to a windows comp ever unless I have too.....

You can delete it directly by command line, but it's an ugly hack. Method shown here is much easier.

i always use the osclean.cmd file

this is great info. i will add it to the file to auto clean those files as well

here is the osclean files. i have not added it yet. as always thanx to Spectral for making it.

i left in the hebrew files. if you dont want those then add the line for *.he to the languages section.
also for vista right click and run as admin

While there are hacks (i.e. using JL_cmdr on the commandline) you're better off waiting on Sprint to release the OS files for the 8130, there's not a whole lot you can do except call them and light a fire under their tuckus. My advice is that you don't want to go whacking around on your 8130 to this extent (this thread) until you have a copy of the firmware -- what happens if something goes wrong and you need to reload the OS from scratch? You'd be completely screwed. :(

I just did it and freed up a ton of memory. I removed all the unused languages, plus all the associated VAD files for each. Plus I took the opportunity to install the latest OS on my Curve (Hong Kong CSL) while I was tinkering. I had been running the OS from O2 that was the only one to allow T-Mobile users to get a web browser, so it was about a year old. I went from 19.5 MB of free space to a full 25 MB.

Great tip! Two questions:
  • Is there a sticky somewhere that covers memory optimizations like this? If not I humbly request that "people who know" start one.
  • If there is no list I'm happy to start poking around. As a general rule, is it ok to load an OS from a PC where the files listed in the ALX don't actually exist (or are renamed) in the PC file system?

AFAIK, there is no sticky, but I agree that there should be. My post here may be a good place to start: BlackBerryForums.com : Your Number One BlackBerry Community.

Obviously, no warranties, use at your own risk, screwing up could brick your device, etc.

Also, someone wrote a script that automates the process of cleaning up the OS before an update: See this thread: BlackBerryForums.com : Your Number One BlackBerry Community

I am still wondering... since no one has officially answered.... maybe JC knows as he wrote the 'how to'. I don't have a PC to sync up and erase the files through Desktop Manager as I run BES and a Mac. However, would LOVE to erase these files as I never us VC and never will. So can I delete these files using Mobylo! Sure Wipe? I have deleted things that wouldn't delete any other way before with the app, and would love to know if this would be possible for at least the bigger files, so I can free up the extra memory.
Thanks in advance.

I re-added this:

net_rim_bb_media_8830_320x240_b

And I got ability to change folder icons once again. Confirmed. Rest still removed.

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 8830: BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105 UP.Browser/5.0.3.3 UP.Link/5.1.2.1)

To be clear,
It is not simple enough to delete as a vendor theme.
I ask the question because the later posts seemed to have evolved away from what was stated at the beginning.

Wow. I had to upgrade to a later software version and was able to delete all of the files and freeing up 7 MB from the upgrade and another 2 MB from removing the VAD Cod file.

Thank you very much.

I went ahead with a backup and then deletion of the VC files using Sure Wipe on the device... with no issues. I also deleted the media that is installed on the device the same way and it went perfectly.
Love the extra space!

I have deleted it from my last 5 or so devices. I also cant stand this new technology of voice recognition customer service help lines.

Computer: "If you have called because you are not able to access the Internet say, Internet. If you have called because you have questions about your bill, say Bill".

Me: "Internet".

Computer: "Ok, I'll connect you to our billing department".

On Voice Command it goes like this.

I press the button. Then there's a beep. I say "call home". The prompt says, "Call home?". I say "yes". The prompt says, "OK calling bank". AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!! Ok really?????? Yes I can just push the button instead.

lol, I feel your pain.

I'll be responding to a voice activated call, me saying "YES", or "NO" or whatever, with a raised voice, firm, so it can hear me on my headset, and my wife will lean over and sweetly say "Be Nice".
